strange extra bit on defender 110

hi bought a 110 s/w and been stripping it to replace the chassie so i climbed under it today to find the bolts that hold the tub on and seen something ive never seen before on a landy its like a big cone with rubber boot on it it bolts onto the main cross-member and goes on to the A frame and has a round canister thing next to it cant see any pipes going to it or wires .anyone know what its for and if so how it work and does it need to have it on.its got me puzzled

oooohhh....sounds posh

just a hydraulic ram with a nitrogen filled accumulator which makes a very good spring,you can remove them but will need stiffer springs at rear to stop back end dropping when loaded ,there a good way of carrying extra wieght without having heavy springs that would be perhaps to stiff lightly loaded

and how dose that work and dose it have to be on

hi does it need power to it for it to work or hydrolics of any kind
