Trying to find more ways of storage on Our 110 Defender. Came up with the idea as seen in photo.
Welded it up for free as had the waterproof box and the metal tubes is from a bedframe. It rests on the sparewheel and attached to sparewheel carrier with jubilee clips. Have option further support by a cargo strap from newly installed D rings on cappings on each side.
Its main purpose is for clothes storage for longer drives/camping in UK. Sleep in cabin and roof has solar panels.

Question is it legal in UK to drive with this? It only sticks out in the middle and doesn't cover lights or numberplate. Could install a lightbar or a set of extra lights/indicators?

Good idea?

I'm not sure if cars are the same, but on trucks you're allowed two metres overhang.
Abit of a grey area I guess. Lots of bicycle racks sticks out and if put 35" tyre on rear carrier would be extra. Trasharoo's type bags can be big too
Painted the uprights in the bright green for more visibility

Stick some reflective red tape on the rear of it and wing it.
Is that a spare wheel carrier or wheel just door mounted?
Its on a swing away carrier. Think britpart finest or similar. Feels solid

I think Id be a bit worried about the stress on the door hinges caused by the extra load taking into account the law of leverage.

Col
Thought about it. Could made a support bar that attaches to the crossmember. With a detatch function for when opening the door
The wheel is currently on a swing away carrier. See the photo on one of my other replied
