INFORMATION is being sought following the theft of a Land Rover from Redditch.

The silver Defender, registration number 277 CFC, which was worth £30,000, was taken from a drive in Mason Road just before 9pm on Tuesday, March 8.

It is a recovery vehicle for a hot air balloon and was marked with the name Co-Op Funeral Care Hot Air Balloon Team.

It contained two Icom transceivers - one worth £750 and the other worth £500, a Motorola two-way radio worth £150, a Hewlett Packard tablet in a black leather case which was worth £600, a yellow Garmin sat nav worth £200, and boxes of Co-Op branded promotional items including coats stickers, trolley tokens and umbrellas worth a total of £300.

West Mercia Police is currently investigating a spate of thefts of Land Rovers and parts, in particular older model Defenders, and has launched Defend Your Defender posters to alert owners and promote crime prevention advice.

It is believed the vehicles are being stripped down and parts sold on the spares market.

Owners are urged to be extra vigilant and note any suspicious activity around their vehicles such as people hanging around or driving past slowly. They are also being advised to ensure immobilisers and other security devices are activated, and preferably to park the vehicle in a garage if they have one or out of sight of the road if at all possible.

Police welcome any information from people who may have noticed someone has access to different types of Land Rover Defenders or if they see an unusually large amount of these vehicles being kept somewhere in suspicious circumstances.

Witnesses or anyone with information should call West Mercia Police on 0300 333 3000 quoting 657-s 080311 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Meeting with the police was of very little use.

They thought they had a lead on an abnormal amounts of LR parts but apparently after looking at them they are all legitimate.

They have basically told me now that the only hope now is if they find it in a container. Africa is the popular choice Im told.

Bit of a bugger really

Additional security on it was a Landrover Cat 1 immobiliser(dealer fitted) and a Tracker, which when it was activated, the signal went dead almost immediately.

This was a professional job, they knew what they wanted and knew how to take it...

Thanks for that. We're trying to suss out what anti-theft deterents do and don't work. Unfortunately it's the victims like yourself that are the key to finding out which measures work best. We've had many arguements on the forum regarding the use of tracking devices on vehicles. My personal opinion is that most (not all) are in many ways a waste of time as tracker jammers can be bought for very little money. The trackers that integrate alarms and immobilisers etc are the only ones that seem to be worth looking at.

My own personal experiences with removing, recovering, bypassing and removing vehicles and vehicle security equipment have led me to believing that often the less sophisticated security measures are the best. My recommended weapon of choice above all others is the disklok steering wheel device. Many landys are simply started and driven away or are towed away using another vehicle. With a disklok fitted in conjunction with the steering wheel turned on full lock, it makes the vehicle almost immpossible to remove without using a hiab (crane).

Keep us updated on what the outcome with yours is.
