Ok so for the last few months ive been trying to diagnose a clunk:

Description:

Happens when you come up off the clutch, there appears to be play in the drivetrain somewhere, so it takes a split second to start moving, theres a big clunk and were off. Its there in every gear, and as you change gears if you dont do it slowly the clunk seems to cause the defender to lurch a few times as it moves foreward. as you come off the accelerator and begin engine breaking it clunks as well.

Sidenote to this, my clutch seems to be getting a small bit worn. on a long journey, after about an hour, if i pull off from a junction it judders a bit before i have my foot fully off the clutch, the biting point is fairly high too but not totally gone yet.

What ive checked/replaced:

All UJ's have been done, front diff seems to have minimal play, rear diff very slightly more play, output shaft is perfect, a-frame Ball joint is fine, i polybushed everything less than a year ago.

Currently i have the front prop off as the splines are shagged in it, this has made no difference, but i did notice minimal play (up down, not rotational) in the output flange of the t/box for the front prop.

So as it stands, i reckon it could be one of two things, the center diff is very worn, or the clutch has failed somehow. possibly the damping springs in the clutch plate? thats what it feels like anyway?

Anyone got any suggestions?

sorry for the long post but this is driving m nuts!!!

Get someone that you trust to engage / disengage the clutch whilst you lay underneath (or close beside). Don't get run over though.

just did that and the play isnt noticable from the prop back, but there is a metal 'CLACK' sound from inside the T/box... so its probably that!?

up on a lift, pry bar and some brute force... did the same for upper links of the a frame. i rebuilt both axles last year and checked the balljont then too on a bench, its definitely not a frame related. :)

not intentionally no, but while i was watching for play earlier while i had someone drive it back and forth an inch or two i was keeping an eye there for play too and nothing.
