Hi people

I have an issue with speakers [specifically the defender dash mounted ones] the sound emitted is awful,At moderate volume,.,engine off when playing a cd, it distorts really bad and sounds like a badly tuned in radio, . I purchased a new Sony head unit and dash speakers but to no avail .

Any ideas??

If its doing it with engine off and with new head/speakers its probably going to be poor speaker mounting (resonating) or loose bits vibrating in sympathy with the music Only other bit left is speaker wiring really. Have you tried wiring it all up on a bench to see (hear) what it sounds like just to prove the kit is ok?

Not yet. That was going to be my next task ,but it will have to wait, as I have just blown my front diff ,

OK diff fixed
I have now changed the stereo head unit and the speakers and the speaker wire and the sound is still terrible, breaking up really badly even at low volume with the engine off.

Any more ideas guys and gals.

I assume you have tried it on the bench and it works ok? If so then you are really only left with a poor supply or earth, while you may have 12v on a meter off load this voltage can reduce under load (as the head unit draws more current). It may reduce it to the point that the head unit cant operate correctly. Try running a wire direct from the battery -ve terminal to the head unit case or -ve terminal on the connector. if that doesn't cure it try one from the +ve battery terminal to the head unit power input.
