Hi everyone, after few issues with my steering as I felt it loose and wobbling, today I decided to change the lower uj over a new one as in theory is something easy but....

The two hex bolt came out without problem but I haven't been able to unscrew the torx one:( and obviously the worst thing happened as I worned the head :eek:.
I have tried to cut a flat head notch with the dremmel but still in place.

So I'm wondering if it's necessary to remove that torx screw (I believe so) in order to take the shaft out and then remove that :mad::mad:torx

I'm even thinking to cut the full piece above the UJ and then easily remove it.

Thanks a lot in advance ;););)

undo it at the top and remove the whole shaft, hammering the bolt head will loosen it eventually

So I can remove the full shaft without undoing the torx screw. It's because I didn't dare to just in case I could possibly damage the shaft or connections to both steering box and upper shaft.
Thanks a lot my friend!

you can damage rotary coupler if steering wheel spins about whilst shafts been removed or when off once youve got the shaft were you want to undo and slide of uj remove keys and let the steering lock

I can see the point now, cheers. But the problem would be that without unscrewing the torx bolt, the shaft doesn't slide and can't come out, am I right?

hm thats true if it wont slide enough at either end to let one end come free, hitting the bolt head will free it

I will give another try tomorrow on daylight to see if that bolt can come out by hitting it altough I'm seriously thinking to get a steel saw and cut the shaft off.
Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it

hit it enough to mushroom head hit socket on and try to undo it if it fails repeat it will come undone eventually, its daily work for me

I tried again today but I wasn't able to remove that bolt, so either I'll take the car to the garage or directly I'll cut in the middle with the hacksaw
Thanks everyone

Can you get some heat on it? If you aren't worried about saving it, can you get the Dremel in there with a cutting disc and split the body of the shaft where the Torx screw goes through? Have you tried hammering a long socket extension with the Torx bit on the screw to try and release its grip? As a last resort, you could disconnect the shaft at the top and remove the Steering box with it still attached then deal with it on the bench.

Yes mate I tried yesterday by cutting with the Dremel inserting the cutting disc in the gap where the bolt pass through but I broke all the discs as it's a very tiny space.
I made a slot in the bolt head but impossible with a big screwdriver and I don't dare either to hit hard with a breaking bar as I might damage the steering box
Cheers

you wedge something underneath then whack the bolt head, the shock mushrooms the head and breaks corrosion and takes the stretch out of the bolt making it easy to undo, i learnt it my apprenticeship and its worked for the last 38 years in the job, heat is the other proved way but you dont want a torch in the engine bay
