Taking a chance on a 2nd hand box. I've fitted 2 recon boxes and both have ended up leaking. I cant afford £500 odd for a new Adwest box so went £95 on one listed as perfect no leaks. At £170 per reconned box I think its worth the risk and see how it goes.

I just replaced mine with a secondhand one from a Disco with 80k miles (mine has 160k) and it turned out perfect - can't believe the difference that it made to the steering. I also picked up a new steering damper from eBay for £4 so I put that on too 
Great....mine came in the post today. It looks dry and in very good condition. Also has traces of Waxoil on it that suggests the donor vehicle was cared for. Meego, I have a used steering pump which I replaced due to a bad diagnosis (Disco 2)
Obviously kept the new one in place. If its of any use you can have it.
Done about 90k miles and was actually working fine, just wrong diagnosis caused change.

is box set to be central when road wheels are

the box has a center high spot with play getting greater from there to both locks
Ok mate. I'll check it tomorrow and see how it goes.
@jamesmartin. Just thinking this through. If I centralise the box and put a pin through the arm and the wheels are off centre, how do I then centre the wheels?

start of by centralising the steering wheel once it is you can go for a short run and see the offset steering wheel sits at when running straight, once back leave steering wheel in the same position it was when running down the road ,adjust drag link till steering wheel is once again centered then retry down the road and readjust if necessary

I done that when I fitted the box. Steering wheel sits dead centre going down the road.

when box has its centralising pin in steering wheel is centered and stays that way running straight down the road ,if so box is centered ,though thats not to say the box is itself correct inside but theres nothing much you can do about that,you can check by removing draglink ball joint from drop arm and going from lock to lock stopping at the center high spot this should coincide with the pin postion, if high point is very knotchy box needs the adjust backing off a little

its quite common boxes arent set correct either poor center or preload on adjuster

It gives you an understanding of how to achieve it.
Which is better than nothing , plus there are pretty pictures. Lets face it . Aligning steering wheels with road wheels and ctring the steering box is not rocket science.
Oh, and yes I have done it on my D2 and my 90.

its not rocket science at all but its also not common knowledge,besides its aligning steering wheel to a centered box then adjusting the road wheels,the order is important
