The repair worked perfectly but you can see where I've overplated on the left. That weld lands smack bang in the middle of where the spring seat sits
 
Most definitely going to cause spring seat to sit on ****. I have to very carefully put a slit down this line, hit it flush then grind the overplated remains off.

Managed to get the cut started with a mini hacksaw as grinder might be too risky. Need to cut out the boot remains to do the rest with big hacksaw. Should sure it perfectly

So the spring bucket mounts will be either side of the weld?

As for datum, use string line and body mount outrigger to the bumper mount and duplicate existing side to repaired side by measuring off the string to centre of the spring bucket.

Yes it will. However, it needs to be flush rather than overlapping which is first job tomorrow. I've got the spring mount location penned. I just don't know how high it should be as chassis is obviously all new. I need a height reference for where the top of it sits.
 
So if I understand correctly. I'll plumb a string line between the two mounts. I then measure and mark a point on the string lines then from there go to my bucket? I do hope this chassis hasn't moved or twisted at all lol.

On the rear, as long as all is pretty lined up I should be fine I think? The rear trailing arms and a frame hold the whole rear in place and line and these haven't been touched?

Correct on both points :)

It's easy to get carried away with things and think about jigs and stuff but we're home gamers without big workshops and all the gear, you've done a great job so far and hats off to you for keeping going with the mission :D
 
Cheers. This is me learning what is in my blood and away from computers and roads :D. That section was worth ripping out and proofing. The earth clamp has made a massive difference too

I guess I can do the same with string line for my suspension bolts. I don't expect the chassis to be 100% true. I do expect and hope it drives straight though :D
 
Landrovers don't drive straight.
They look on a tilt until the fat bloke gets in.
Just make sure your welds are good & switch the brain off. You can over think things & send yourself mad.

Tis hard not to @Hicap phill that's for sure. I'm not fat. But we have been having donuts 3-4 times a week at work so there's time yet :D

Welds are strong :)
 
I must be well trained then.
If I touch a Landrover,work thoughts shuts off.
My mind is clear.
But it could be I don't have welding projects to worry about. :oops:

No I mean it's hard not to over think when it comes to integrity of repairs and weld locations etc. All problem solving. I am definitely getting better with calmness with the torch. Sounds crazy but I do a dry run of the weld first to check it's comfy and my hand doesn't catch on parts etc. Definitely works

Props, gotta find work arounds for getting decent propping for your arms, it really helps to steady the torch.

I do the dry run with the torch too :) Biggest prob I've had is the tip gumming up with spatter from welding the galv and residue from the rust preserver.
