If yu can get at the back, screw on a nut to join both bolts together

I'll give it a go. I can get to the back but it's dirty as fxuk. Did try cleaning it up to get a tap in the back but no joy. It's going to be satisfying cleaning these threads one the snapped ones are out lol.

Normal size 30mm socket ordered and hub nut spanner too. I couldn't believe that I pretty much released them with my fingers. Good news is it may have had a little bit of love over a part of it's life as both sides were timken. Doing the axle has boosted me again. I was a bit bored of welding and have a huge list so thought I'd do mech things on the list rather than nothing!

Diff oil looks pretty well to be honest. Diff looks good too to the untrained eye. No visible marking to teeth and all very fresh looking. Very slight wiggle between output flange and crown wheel. My prop and died flange seem to have a corresponding chunk out of each of them though. Borrowed a 30 from work - still couldn't wedge it in enough to get a decent fit to undo fulcrum. I've ordered another 30 off eBay- hopefully it's more flimsy so I can actually get it on the nut!

I used a regular 30mm socket and used to have a HD open end spanner that slid into a scaff tube for the really tricky ones.

Grind your socket down if it still don't fit in the gap.

That's what I tried but socket was still to big so ordered a combi spanner. Yeah I needed the scaff tube for the calipers bolts - so far they've been the toughest. Once I get the fulcrum nut off I can rebuild my axle up fresh with fresh paint.

I once spilt gearbox oil in my boot. That's one horrible smell that never goes.

Not much to report tonight. Went b&m earlier and bought a load of vinegar. Filled a bucket and dropped all my sandwich bags of bolts into it and a few brackets. Also threw rear calipers in. Then cleaned up my workshop (conservatory lol) and put all my rear axle bits n diff in there. Plan to put a 300tdi on an engine stand in there over winter too lol

You will be able to eat your dinner off the rear axle when I'm done. Until it gets muddy again that is lol.
Is there any way of checking the general condition of diff whilst it's off without taking it apart? All I've checked is for play between prop flange and crown wheel. That's a slight bit of a tap but not over a mm I doubt

I did skim read at work but from what I could see it more goes into the serious stuff of it rather than a rule if of thumb of if it's f@cked or not

it shud give yu setting parameters and tolerances, yu can measure and see if it is still in spec.

only really by looking at the bearing races,rocking the crown wheel will show better the backlash and check diff gears for excess play and shaft doesnt move in the housing

Thanks both. I'll read through and check when I have time off. I need to get myself a dial gauge and half decent set of mics for the future also. That's one thing I couldn't find of my grandads when I had to clear his garage

What do you do when you have this much to do on a project? You start another and swamp yourself.

Looks worse than it is, nice to see a genuine Defender 200Tdi, I never saw too many of those living on the continent for so long.

Yrm bits will tidy all the bulkhead. It's the chassis I'm worried about. Once wings are off I'll lift tub off with tractor. The engine is a peach mate! Not that far over 100k and feels very strong.

Yes gotta get the karma points in. Someone helped me out at the weekend when they didn't have to so I'm keeping the cycle going

I'll add more pics once further stripped and got hold of sand blaster
