starting problem

As an inexperienced mechanic, but sadly experienced in costly faults with my 300Tdi 1996 Disco, I have decided to seek the guidance of fellow owners.

Not for the first time, my Disco won't start.

It has the standard key fob locking/immobiliser plus the retro dealer-fit steering wheel immobiliser.

Without any sign of problem, the car will not now start. I suspect the immobiliser has not disengaged, as I have checked vehicle battery plus key fob battery. On turning the key, all I get is a click as if I have not used the retro-fit fob immobiliser.

Last time this happened (12 months ago) an electrical specialist charged me £130, apparently just to remove the dashboard and reconnect a wire which had come loose. Since I have no idea where to start this process, or whether it might work, has anyone else suffered, and rectified, this problem?

You starter isn't stuck is it? we had a tractor on the farm that would stick and you had to keep turning the key until eventually one click was enough to free it, next turn would start the engine....

I have exactly the same problem, (and im in no way a mechanic) had no signs of problems until when I had to go to work thismorning, tried to start the car but all I could hear was a slight click.

I had this problem with my bike many moons ago, So I used to carry a wrench to tap the starter while turning the key, this would get the starter spinning again. turned out the starter brushes where worn out.
Just a taught.

unfortunatly I cant reach the starter from the driver seat so gotta wait for some help to try this method and see if I can source the problem.

sounds simple but check the starter fuse... that had me 1 day.went through regular checks -starter, immobilisor etc and after about 2 hours i realised i should check the fuse.
