Starter motor problem

Hello all,

Sorry to make my first post a question, but I've just bought a series 3 petrol landy and now it won't start.

It turned over very slowly earlier this evening and eventually fired, but then made a loud screeching / grinding noise which was independant of the clutch operation but did vary with engine speed. This stopped after about a mile, but now when I try to start it the starter spins but doesn't engage or turn the engine.

Am I right in thinking that I've destroyed the starter or could it be something more serious?

take it off and clean up the bendex, the slidey bit that has the gear on it..it should slide back and forth easily

sounds a bit like you may have run it with the bendix engaged, possibly burn't it out

OK I have the starter off and as suspected the bendix has been well and truly chewed up. There are some marks on the ring gear but I'm hoping that they're not too bad.

However, the guy at the local motor factors tells me that the starter that I had on my series 3 is actually from a Defender. It is a combined starter and solenoid.

Will it cause me any problems if I refit the same type of starter or should I go for a series 3 starter and separate solenoid - assuming that's what it should have?

While the starter motor is out have a look at the ring gear on the engine. How badly worn is it?

i would replace like for like if it works ok

Trouble is I don't know if it works OK or not - I've only driven it home so far!

The ring gear doesn't look too bad to my untrained eye. Although there is some damage to the teeth I'm hoping to get away with just a new starter. What I'm not sure about is whether the problem was caused by an incorrect starter being fitted or is it just because the starter has had it?

Ring gear looks fine - the starter hasn't chewed it up so swap like for like.

make double sure you put the right one back in, they are not compatable with the incorrect ring gear.

Right - so the problem could have been caused by the Defender starter that was fitted, and I should put back a series 3 starter and a separate solenoid?

What's confusing me is that the Series 3 Repair Operation Manual shows a starter that looks similar to the one that I have - i.e. has a solenoid attached to it.

Did the series 3 2 1/4 petrol have a starter with an attached solenoid at any point? If so does anyone have the part number?

Sorry for so many questions - I'm new at this and just want to make sure I fit the right one!

my info is that the series 111 had either type of starter fitted!
