Hey guys, having some issues wit my starter. i cleaned the connectors an it started to turn over again but now has stopped. i check the batt an the volt sits at 11.75 and drops to around 11.50 when ignition is full turned. so not sure if that would restrict the starter from turning completely or pos more than one fault...? any input? thanks

what colour is it?

When you turn the key to position 3 to start the engine, do you hear the starter click? Does it turn the engine? Is this an intermittent problem which got worse?
What engine?

the colour of? it jus happened one morning. so thot it was immobilizer but tested it an ignition cable to starter was receiving voltage. so cleaned it. and started to strip out when i connected batt to it, then it started. put back together and it turned. but didnt fire. so think it may be 2 probs.... and then the starter stopped again! lol ... its a bit of a mind f***

I've just had a simular problem. I couldn't hear the starter clicking, but if I could then I would be thinking about getting the starter repair kit to change the contacts. The clicking should be the starter. I would check the battery connections are tight, the positive connection to the starter is secure, the control wire to the starter is tight. Also the 0volt return wire from the starter/engine or where ever it is.

My problem was the electrical contacts in the switch on the rear of the ignition barrel being dirty/carbonned up. I took the plastic off the rear of the switch to reveal the contacts through small holes. While operating the switch manually with a screw driver I wiped the contacts with sand paper to clean them a bit. May not be the same fault as yours but something easy to check. Just be careful when taking the switch off. Disconnect the battery power first. Also if it's an auto theres tricky plastic and metal bits which are primed by the auto inhibit mechanisum, behimd the switch when you pull it off. Make sure you see how they fit in just incase they jump out.
What colour = what engine/gearbox/year. ;)

i think i read ur post previously b4 lookin at starter as i checked the ignition, immobilizer, and switch as u said! all was good :D

think in the morning i'll give it another check over the starter an get the sandpaper out for the conneector. pos c bout a replacement as well.

an its a RED 1.8 manual 1998. and yes im aware its a petrol! :D but compared to the mr2, 2lt vectra, fto, supra ....and worst of all ford PROBE its a fine vehicle!! ;)

Whilst you are checking cable connections also check the earth cable on the battery is tight. then check earht cable from battery to bodywork and bodywork to engine.
hope this helps if you find the problem post it here so others can have a database ect if they have similar problems.

was raining today an got caught up wit work so will have to do all this tomoz. i got another car to jump start it case the batts flat so hopefully all goes well.

thanks for the input and fingers crossed! :D

As Diesel Do sez, battery undercharged - put it on a charge for 8 or so hours, then re-check the voltage it gives. Fully charged it should be well over 12 volts

hey guys! finally got back to sortin things out after the snow, had a helping hand from a few friends. disconnected cables an wired live feeds to batt an earth an still no life again from starter. it works only now an again.

so popped it into first gear an with help of 4 guys an a hill i managed to bump start it!! :D ran an drove perfect for 30 mins, driving round to charge up batt prop. then home an turned off...as soon as i turn on a few secs after, its back to same 'zero life' isssue. so gonna replace starter. any1 know some where good to get a part worn or new?

thanks! :D
