I’m just posting this for information purposes as it might help someone as my problem is fixed....

Bought a 99 D2 td5....cheap!! When I went to look at it it was difficult to start...wind for 20 – 30 seconds maybe more. Eventually fired up and ran ok.

Drove it home....weeks later went to start it....the same wind wind wind with the odd cough it eventually went. Thought to self...its got a good battery!! :)

Opened the bonnet....first time!! It was cheaeep, I was buying it if it ran or not :)....anyway its a brand new shiny battery....and new terminals. Thought to self....someone’s tried to make it start...that’s why its cheap.

A few more attempts to start on different days....it'll wind and wind but some times it starts sometimes not but always the odd cough....so something s firing sometimes. After a few more attempts...find a squirt of brake cleaner in to the intake and it fires and runs straight away.

So we'll try the usual culprits... connect fuel pressure gauge....hmm 1.2 bar...not good :( Rob fuel pump from another D2 that starts, drop it in the tank, check fuel pressure 4.2 bar :) fixed!!! Turn key...wind wind wind...same will not start!! Slam bonnet go inside :)

Ok try again...fuel pressure gauge still attached.....wind engine watching gauge....fuel pressure very erratic anything from 0.5 bar to 4.2 bar....only thing that could cause that...pump!! but it'll hold 4.2 bar all day until engine cranked....must be loosing power to the pump when cranking....

Connect battery pack to all electrics except starter. Use battery to power only the starter.....wind wind wind...still no go. Fuel pressure still erratic.....still starts first turn with brake cleaner :)
Ok runs perfect once started so its a starter/cranking problem. Thought to self...lucky I have a spare starter :)

On to ramp to change starter....spanner on to the nut holding the main power wire....connection tight but starter moves as went to slacken nut!!! Starter is loose on its mounting bolts!!!

All this time and all the cranking was at a decent engine speed....have fixed many td5s and it cranked over like normal.

As Im this far....I'll change the starter anyway. Bolted in new (used) starter and tighten bolts....turn the key...fired up straight away just like you’d expect from a td5. 2 weeks on and its starting on the button every time. :)

Cant say for sure if it was the starter or just the fact it was loose....though I suspect the latter....it can only have been electrical interference causing the pcm to go berserk .

I'm quite sure that if you'll read fault codes there is a "noisy crank signal" or other crank signal related code logged...it's a common issue that a worn starter disturbs the crank signal causing no start symptom
