I have a sqeek on my s3 88 diesel, I think its one of the uj's on the front propshaft, I tried to grease them, but instead of it coming out of all 4 points, the grease only ouzes out of one.
Question is whether to attempt a replacement of the uj (diff end) or buy a new propshaft, I havent had chance to look at prices yet but I want to avoid britpart if I can afford to!

Before removing the prop, chock the front wheels put the transfer box in neutral and jack and support the rear wheels off the ground.(axle stands) You should then be able to rotate the propshaft. Wear in one particular UJ should be easy to spot.
If there's not much wear in the central splined joint, I'd go for replacing the UJ's. It's not a difficult job, just a bit fiddly. You will need circlip pliers, and a vice is handy.

Ujs cause drivetrain vibrations when they go. Stick it in 4wd and drive up a slight hill in 2nd and give some throttle to check. Wont do any harm as a one off test. Squeaks on my s3 were spring bushes

Well ive brought a new uj now anyway, its going to need doing soon anyway because when I had the prop off, it was really stiff in one direction.
Ronsealdeath, how did you sort the bushes? I guess its just buy new ones. If so are they hard to do?

If you have a stiff UJ (oo eck!) then you just fouund your squeak. They'll chirp as they go bad.

Replace them in pairs - do both ends of the shaft, grease the living hell out of them and do it at every oil change as well.

Ok Ive got the bits for 1 end of the prop, so will have to do for now, nither end is loose at all, its just squeaky! Hopefull will get round to it sunday:)

Am I right in thinking no damage will occour from just removing the prop and driving it for a few days ?
