L322 Squealing Brakes - help please! (Pads/Discs changed already)

Hi all

i need some wisdom from the RR community please!

I have a 2011 RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 which I bought second hand from a private owner at the end of 2015.

I noticed the brakes squealed slightly on the test drive, but nothing too major. Ever since though, the brake squeal has got worse and worse. It usually happens on light to medium application (e.g. stopping in traffic or at traffic lights) and is horrendously loud. I believe the sound is coming from the front.

So far I've:
1) replaced genuine pads and discs with Borg & Beck at front and replaced genuine pads at back with Borg & Beck (just in case it was rear). Squeak continued immediately after fitting.
2) had the brakes checked over by LR at service - they confirmed there were no issues with pads, discs or sticky calipers.

All LR could identify was that the pads/discs were non-genuine and their only suggestion was putting a chamfer on the pads to see if that fixed the problem. However, that's another £240 with no definite prospect of fixing the issue & which could just be throwing good money after bad!

I'm slightly at my wits end as I can't see how it can be a pad/disc problem which will be fixed with a chamfer if the problem continued straight after a full pad/disc change.

Has anyone else had this problem and/or does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? Not hugely mechanically savvy so simple answers would be much appreciated.

I was always told the same about the copper grease and always stick a lick on the back of them
 
£240 to chamfer 4 pads, I'll do it for £180 mate.

Just remove the pads and send them to me '''''free delivery and return postage''''''

I had the same thing a couple of years ago and changed to genuine discs and pads never had an issue since - it makes no sense but then it is a land rover product :(
 
I'd guess there is a massive difference between Borg n Beck and Brembo, the OEM.

A shiny round thing does not a proper disc make!

Thanks for all your replies, I think I'll give the copper grease a go and then consider whether replacing with OEM/chamfering is worth it considering cost vs squeak! Cheers, Alex
 
You've implied you undertook the replacing of the discs and pads yourself....so,

* Did you clean the hubs of dirt/rust and lightly grease them with copper slip prior to fitting the new discs?

* Did you remove the stainless formed shims from the carriers and clean said carriers of rust scale and then greased both sides of the shims prior to refitting them?

* Did you check the slider pins move freely?

* Did the pads fit freely or were they very tight?

* Are the dust shields properly secure at their respective mounting bolts?

Hi myfirstl322, thanks for your message. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression but I didn't do any of the replacing myself, so I can't say if any of the above was done I'm afraid.
 
Chamfering the leading edge of either pads or shoes to reduce squeal is standard practice has been since Adam was a lad. It was done before David rode around Jericho in his Triumph. Must have been a TR6.
 
Moses went up Mt Sinai to collect 2 tablets (stupid place for a Chemist's)
then he came down in his Triumph,

I always believed it was a Model H motorcycle because it had a (Moses) basket weave sidecar which would of held the tablets nicely while he concentrated on braking during his descent.;)

Unaware he lent it to David for a bit of Joyriding?:cool:

Its a DIY job m8, you need the following to chamfer them... a file...
