Got a call out to a friend, who coming back from Thiefrow Airport, had a sudden cooling of the heater output and raising of the water temp gauge.

Met them as they limped into Clackets Lane services. By then the oil light had turned it's self on.

Put the system tester on and water pee'd out the side seam of the expansion tank.

Can only guess the pressure relief cap failed to do it'd job, we got them trailered home, and will do the tank and cap. Then re-test to see if any other damage was done.

But that's a new one on me.

Mine went last summer. Changed expansion tank, water pump failed few months later, not sure if the incidents were related, changed that. no problems since

look at cap and get it pressure checked as increased pressure should blow off through it ,feel rad all over when hot to see its okay ,if top hose gets hot thermostats working

The cap should vent at 1bar, so we'll replace that with a replacement tank.

Then to re-check the rest of the system, first with plain water, then if all OK, anti-freeze mix.
First my mate knew of problem was heater went cold on the motorway.

Cheers for the info tho

The D1 expansion tank splitting along the seam is not unknown, it may be a design or batch fault, the permament fix is to replace with the white RRC item which is a direct replacement, they don't split and you can easy monitor the coolent level without undoing the cap.

mine split in the same place whilst the Mrs was having a play in our fields outside the house, we were lucky it happened there. I just took it down to the fact its a Land Rover and its 15 years old, if yours is a 300 it cant be no spring chicken either. No probs since. And replace as Discool sais.

changed the expansion tank for the RR white plasticy one, new cap, pressure tested...vented at 1 bar.

No other problems from anywhere else, wll re-fill with anti-freeze tomorrow, the thermostat worked fine and the top hose was hot as pukka, I checked the temp for the thermo and it was as should be 88 degrees.

Think he got away with that one, as he initially thought it was HGF.
