Took the dash apart to access the spider and it wasn't there. will i have one some where else. The disco has the problems associated with a faulty spider (sudden cut out, alarm/immobiliser problems, won't start) but i don't seem to have one. any advice? Thx Ian

1 Does your remote have 1 or 2 buttons?
2 When it cuts out does the engine turnover/crank and not fire or do nothing?
From my experience the spider(if fitted) will not cause it to cut out once started it will just fail to crank.
Doubt it on a P reg but has it got EDC or just a normal stop solenoid?

You may have a tamper-proof fuel cut off solenoid commonly known as a DDS, digital diesel solenoid.
They can cause the problems you describe.
If you have one, black lump of plastic on end of solenoid with 3 wires, imo the best thing you can do is replace it with a standard solenoid or remove the plastic gubbins and wire with single wire from loom.
Underneath the plastic bit is a standard solenoid which is probably ok, it's the tamper-proof bit that causes the problems.

The DDS is fitted to the rear of the fuel injection pump in the same position that the normal fuel cut off solenoid is located. The body of the dds is a lump of black plastic with 3 wires coming out. The black plastic is held in place with two metal rivits pointing horizontally towards the rear. To get the dds off you have to drill out the rivits. When you get it off, underneath is a standard stop solenoid with 1 connection. You connect this to one of the 3 wires that used to connect to the dds, the one that switches on with the ignition, the other two wires can be left.

Planning to check the spider on my 96 Disco this weekend - as a matter of interest, how much time should I allow for this task........????

Thanks for the tip - this is the document I am using for guidance !! Plan to make all necessary checks prior to dismantling !!!
