Space saver wheel

I've not yet given up on my idea of finding a space saver wheel which could be used in place of a standard wheel in an emergency. I currently run Defender wheels with 7.50 / 16 tyres.

I know it sounds daft but I'm trying to free up some space in the back (don't want a spare on the bonnet or I the back as its now a rag top). I rarely go more than 20 miles from home and could shove the full size spare in if I decided to go green landing or further afield.

Does anyone know if there is a spacesaver size wheel that might fit?

You could just use an 600x16,I have and it is good enough to get you home at a sensible speed.

Why do you consider this a risk/ requirement if you're only travelling max 20 miles? Just bung a spare in the back tub?

My two daughters sit on the benches in the back so space is really limited. I've managed to wedge the spare in at an angle against the rear bulkhead (seat belt bar obstructs) but I now can't fold up the bench seats if I need to.

Just "adjust" the seat belt bar and move the benches to the very rear of the tub. That is what I did with mine when I fitted 750's. The original seat-belt bar was exactly the right size for a 205 to fit underneath it. So I cut out the top bar and re-welded it further up the loop so that I could fit the larger tyre underneath it.

Here is a pic of my set up if you can see past the dogs! That has a brand new Michelin 750 ZXL fitted to a military HD rim tucked up against the bulkhead.

I terms of additional space in the back I have my benches fitted as far rearward as possible so when folded down the front most edge is actually behind the tyre and it does not take up any of the passenger bench space. There is enough space between the front edge of the bench and the bulkhead for a little over the full width of the tyre.

Wot Tottot said - use a 6.00 x 16.

I've got Avon Ranger AT's 205/80 R16 all round with an old Pirelli Cinterato 6.00 x 16 handing on the rear door. Must say it looks good and it isn't so heavy as to pull at the hinges either.

Thanks for the suggesrion - Nice looking Landy! Same set up as me then. Trouble is I don't weld, although that is not a solution changer. After I fitted the bar I came across the ones which don't have that horizontal bar - just another bracket to the mid bulkhead instead...so wished I'd seen them earlier!

I suppose I could use a smaller wheel / tyre as a spare but I assumed the rolling diameter would gavevto be the same to be legal

If you could find someone locally who can weld for a reasonably priced it would be fairly easy to either move the bar or change yours to have the angle brackets down to the bulkhead. Or just sell the one you have a d buy the single brackets. I'm fairly sure they uses the same mounting holes and the seat belt bars are always in demand and go for good prices.

I know you said you didn't want it but there is nothing wrong with having it on the bonnet. It doesn't limit visibility as much as people say and you very quickly adjust you positioning when maneuvering so you can see around it. I have one there as well (got a set of 6 hd rims, would have been rude not to use them all)

what will you do with the extra half a tyres thickness space gain

i feel you though, cant stand the spare on the bonnet or eating up leg space/cargo space in the rear (which is actually quite small in an 88) swing away could still be possible ?

or what about side saddle like the MOD wolfs ?

The space saver that came with my car has less rolling diameter.I call it a bike wheel.

I'd actually love the spare on the bonnet - perfect look! but I use a battery disconnector every time I park up- especially in the garage as I don't fancy chancing burning the house down with old landy wiring! Just makes access clumsy I guess.
