G'day folks,

'Been paint stripping parts today.

The middle cover for the seat box has / had a load of bitumen goo on the underside. There's a possibility that, that was someone thinking it was good for rust proofing (and didn't realise it was Birmabright), or there's another reason I can think of which is that Land Rover originally fitted sound deadening material here...

...has anyone come across this before?

I do happen to own the more luxurious 12 seater station wagon (I'll have you know) so perhaps this was a superior upgrade (he says hopefully because the grass is always greener where I am and it is nice to get additional confirmation)?

Maybe it's to insulate the lid incase the battery terminals short on it in an 'upside down' situation?
Oh now you've got me thinking. I thought that big one was for under the middle seat. I'm going to have to check.

If it is indeed the cover for the under seat battery compartment then I guess there was some sort of rubber then... ?

No my battery covers got nothing, It was just a thought. They probably thought it would drown out the transmission whine or something if it was the middle cover (they were hopeful)
Or- most likely it got sprayed with underseal the last time the underneath was done.

It's to help deadern drumming sounds.
Commonly found on the inside of car doors.
You can buy it in sheets with a sticky back.

Having had another look: The weird thing about the application is that it doesn't go to the edges where they meet with the seat box structure. So it looks more like it had sound deadening bitumen based stuff...

Yep yep, thanks, I know where / how / why etc but this comes to be more of a rivet counter question => "Did Land Rover put it there 'cos I got one of the posh versions" or not?

I've never seen sound insulation as an optional extra on the official LR catalogue. Only really did carpets?

Oh right - thanks - there were rubber mats of course and sound deadening around the bulkhead on the station wagons.

I think I'm going to have to delve deeper into the James Taylor book tonight and stop watching crap on yew toob.

I've got a 1977 station wagon lwb, my seat box lids do not have any form of coating on them.

Thanks chap,

The general consensus on the series 2 club forum is that it is probably under seal...

...did the James Taylor book reading last night help? Did it bugger...
