Something broken?

Hi Guys,

Following some off roading at the weekend, something seems to up with the landy (Disco 1). It seems to drive straight and normal when power is applied but lerch left/wander when lifting off the power.

Any ideas what this could be? I can't see anything obvious.

check the trailing arm and radius arm chassis end bushes and bolts

could be a sticky brake that is binding just enough to pull to one side jack each corner in turn and spin the wheel if there is more resistance on one than the other then that will show you which brake is sticking then you can have the wheel off on the offending corner and see why it's sticking and rectify it.

Thanks for the reply. I checked those and all seems to be solid. I couldn't get any play with a pry bar but the car was on the ground.

I think I've found the fault. It has a Terrafirma steering damper on the rear steering arm and this was very loose. I've tightened it up but not driven it as yet.

Once i'd tightened it to a certain point, the blue shroud would just spin. I tightened the other side and the silver body of the unit would just turn once tight. Is this normal/due to it being fixed to the shock's head/body?

It does seem to have a bit of a sticky brake issue with a touch of scraping going on. I guess this related to lots of crud getting in by the brake caliper pistons.

test drove it. Seems to be much better but still feels like there is movement on lift off. Seems more from rear end but not sure.

Is there any way of adjusting that steering damper?

Back axle is lozenging.

Rebush the whole back suspension with polybushes.

this would be the mount on the top no?

Ok. I've driven it a bit more and something is definitely wrong. I can't see/feel any obvious problem/play but it is still feeling like something, probably the rear end, is moving when coming off throttle. It is also wandering more on bumpy lanes and making it feel quite nervous to drive.

Any help would be appreciated as I can't afford to throw money at it changing everything in sight.

Rebush it won't cost more than 30 quid if u use std bushes

can it be done without a ramp and press?

yes mate do you at least have a vice if yes then undue the trailing arms and do them by either cutting the old one out have having a fire burning it out then using your vice as a press and it pops out there are many ways but fire tea helper and thick gloves is the easiest if you have a open space and a bit of time

I've struggled in the past with a big G clamp and a selection of suitable sized sockets!

Polybushes are definitely worth the extra - they have a slightly higher shore rating compared to the standard type. They also return to their original shape much more readily than standard bushes after being deformed when they are worked.
