yea, I knew it was Dr. Evil with the silly powered machine but yours won't have an empty stable either when finished :)

That's confirmed then.

Put a locker in a Salisbury and you're strong and cheap. Downsides are awkward diff fitting, weaker axle casing and less diff clearance. Upsides are good and cheap.:

Hmm, that's what I was thinking. Suppose the fact that I've got a new Detroit locker to fit a Salisbury for half the price of a new one is kinda justifying swapping over though. Not really too worried about ground clearance as it'll probably be six and half dozen as the other as can fit a heavy duty bolt on pan to the Salisbury while I have a wrap around terrafirma one on my rover axle at the moment.

My TD5 definitely isn't standard but with 33s that aren't too agressive and it being predominatley a daily driver, I doubt I'll have too much trouble and I'm just being paranoid.

Suppose stick the tru-trac into the front and salisbury locker and axle in the rear and then worry about upgrading bits like the front shafts and CVs and evenutally rear shafts and maybe the cwps if and when they start complaining :) Could always brace the axle casing across the diff like is done in some rally and race cars with similar type axles if I was worried about it snapping.

ive had a detroit in the rear salisbury on my 110 td5 for around 3 years now, often running 37 inch tyres in serious off road mode, barring a few snapped shafts, no drama's

Sounds like you got it pretty well dialed Dave, see how you get on then but tbh on 33" you're usually alright anyway.

All the best :)

Yeah for sure john and it definitely gets driven hard, but the shaft breakage is definitely the tyre size that causes it, plus if you think you had some pattern shafts.

I have a theory that there are so many pattern shafts in circulation that people break them regular, 10 spline shafts are all factory which is why they probably last better than a fair few 24 splines!

I've been looking at those heavy duty drive flanges. Would it be ok to just throw them on with the old half shafts in or is that ill advised?? And how do I got em on rear axel as the originals are part of half shafts?

Yep, should all go nicely... until fit my 37 Simex and see red mist while "green-laning" :D

Fitting the HD drive flanges on standard shafts will be ok Nicky but in my opinion, the splines on the shaft will still wear or the shaft will break so it's probably best to go the full hog and get the ashcroft shafts and flanges if you need them.

the genuine flanges are pretty good anyway to be honest, probably better than the cheaper "Heavy duty" flanges that you can buy... Only difference is the cheap heavy duty ones look nice :p

That's wat I thought they look better. Haha.

Dave's got the right idea, again :p

Ashcroft flanges are at least double the price of cheapos because of the material they are made from. As such they will stand up to abuse better, but stock shafts and flanges do as long as they are kept oiled.

No point fitting anything new to anything worn I'm afraid as the worn part will just damage the new.

Regards the rear, you don't want flanges unless you have to, ie, when fitting HD shafts. Read stock shafts are one piece, that's one less thing to wear out so it's a good thing. Certain defender axles had flanges on the rear so you could always look at fitting defender shafts.

As for the front, by all means fit them with new cvs if not even Ashcroft, the other major bonus is they are fully waterproof and will hold oil, this keeps the splines happy

Ive just spent a dangerous evening on YouTube watching big block chevy videos, I have now decided AT THE VERY LEAST I need more overlap on my cam :p

And so commences the strip down of the Britpart HD Double Pump compressor, ready to customise it for the onboard air build:

Just a few hours to kill tonight and I'm a little bored so...

So, that'll do for tonight.

This is the compressor in bits, my favourite :)

Bloody simple/crude buggers if I'm honest, but then again a compressor of this output for around 80 quid is never going to be particularly high quality.

Hopefully it'll make up what it lacks in finesse in brute horsepower :D

Anyway the main reason for stripping down this far...

...was to drill out these holes which are the input (large casings) and output (small casings) of the compressors, interestingly the piston tops themselves are valved which I guess simplifies the assembly.

Anyway these holes are currently a highly non-preferred thread at M12x1mm, pretty much the only use of that is brake pipe fittings.

I will drill and tap these to 1/4BSP which is a similar size, I think the tap drill is 11.8 for 1/4BSP, but moreover it is a very common thread size used in pneumatics so it will make life easy.

The Ashcroft stuff is on 1/8BSP (rightly so) which is ideal too.

Anyway last job was to remove the sticker from the motor body and, seeing as you all know me so well by now I'm sure you'll guess, there's nothing I enjoy more than a custom repaint :D

More to follow :)
