So has mine had a thermostat mod or not?

Mines a late 2000 build registered in 07/01/2001 and hasn't got the PRT fitted but it will do when I get the head back on now the artic blast seems to have gone away.:)

Good man - just spotted this on the bulletin link that Will posted #109

NOTE: A new design of cylinder head gasket and remotely mounted thermostat has been introduced into production at VIN 1A 324162.

Well I thought it was the end of the thread but this doesn't add up. Either my reg doc is messed up or my Freebie isnt as straight as I thought it was. Its Vin starts with 1A58 and it was first registered on the 29/09/2000.

No, you are OK. Again from the bulletin the numbering sequencing is as follow:

WA 600000 to YA 699999
YA 500000 to 1A 599999
1A 300000 to 1A 324161

So yours is a 1A but is before 1A 324162

Yep, so RCV are wrong for whatever reason. I'm guessing they checked the vin and assumed rather than checking the reg number, if anyone can check history/recalls/mods by a reg number.

i've had instances of the vin saying one thing and what's actually fitted on the car being another.

halfway through production runs they have substituted parts and not updated the vin.
this is not uncommon.

if you want your freelander to stay healthy search on here for all the modifications and check to see if yours has them ;)

They may have seen 1A and assumed wrongly. In any event you are back to a choice of get it fitted or carry on as before with - Majority advice is get it done and RCV is as good a place as any and if they say leave well alone, then you can insist. All the best with it:)

Excellent, thanks very much for everyones input and no more questions for now! I'll post an update once RCV have seen the car in person and whether they then fit the new one or not and of course the end result.

Just had a thought before I go any further. Reading that mod bulletin it looks a bit like the thermo mod has to be done at the same time as the hg mods are done?

No it doesn't it can be done in isolation :). All these mods came out at the same time in around 2001 so garages were encouraged to do them all at the same time to early 1.8's.

Will.

The bulletin covers HG failure. The logic of upgrading your cooling system still holds good as a preventative measure - so we (forum) are all agreed. Then there is the leave well alone position (which TBH) I'm probably alone in re stating - but then mine has the mods!! your call in the end:)

Ok thanks for that. So if mine has the original hg in without hg mods the new up to date thermo mod won't clash and become confused and vice versa.

Wasn't it advised to upgrade the oil rail at the same time?

yes, in the full monty MLS procedure (£1000 at an LR specialist). The PRT upgrade is a precaution against HGF - no a guarantee. In other words, it cant do any harm!
