Not sure what model, Discobasher had it knocking around. It's pretty flexible though. I'll ask him later and post the info for you.

Nobber, the hose is a standard 2.5 N/A intake to filter

sorry man , couldnt resist.

Just thought I'd get this thread going again since I'm thinking of making me own snorkel some time since the uni design workshops are great as are the metal stores :D . I've got a 2.25 petrol series 3, what's the best way of going about an air filter for it? Is it just a case of getting a mushroom top jobby at the top go the snork' or do I need one in the engine bay somewhere?
Cheers guys.

i have a proper land rover oil filter box, but instead of the holes at the top, it has another pipe leading from it, got it on ebay. its in the series parts catalouge if you have it.

could use a smiliar idea and make an airtight box the same design as it?

the oil filled filter is about the best sort of filter you can get, much better than those silly KnN jobbies

The oil filter is about as good as you can get? Why doesn't every modern car use it then?! My personal opinion is that I don't like the design. As for K&N being rubbish.....they are not at all, infact they are very good filters! Just avoid getting a cone style one as I don't think it's a particualrly good idea to have an open ended filter on an of road vehicle. But syaing that, on a standard series enigne its pretty pointles going for a K&N, the engine isn't going to benefit from it really, may as well get a bog standard cheapo filter.

Righto, sorry to be a bind an all, but you got a link to it mate? Can't find it at all.

Yeah sure, it the one Titled "Our Series 2A project" http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f6/our-series-2a-project-60423-3.html

We used an early Range Rover EFI airbox as wanted to ditch the standard unit. Air flow was the wrong way round (well, wrong for our landie for where we wanted the airbox, as it would mean the exit for the filter would be tight next to the wing, and annoyng to replace). So we cut both ends off and swapped them round.

Used some stainless steel pipe we had kicking about to do the fixed metal bit and made upa bit of bracketry. Had to elongate the air vent hole slightly for the metal elbow...

Add some bits of pipe we had about, and a few coats of hammerite and sorted :) I know its not perfect or award winning craftsmanship, but it's very well sealed, very sturdy and does the job.

Cost...
Snorkel top from ebay = £10
Elbow bit at the bottom = £8
Rest of bits = Found in garden or whatever...but all of the bits would be cheap to get anyway.

As for the light bar...well I cheated, I just drilled holes in the roof and bolted them on...one less thing I had to fabricate hehe.

the oil filled air filter was designed to be able to cope with all extremes, including high particle count (sand/grit) and highly moist air - and it will do that far far better than a most of todays modern alternatives, most of which would collapse due to high moisture content air or would become quickly blocked due to the high particle count

they do tend to be rather large, which is probably why they aren't fitted to cars, they are however often to fitted to many industrial vehicles

So why don't they use it in Range Rovers etc etc if it is far better than modern alternatives? I have used air filters with snorkels on thousands of miles of sand. Nothing got through...and the filter certainly wasn't clogged....infact it was damn clean, didnt even need shaking out or anything. Not saying you are wrong, just I prefer the design of more modern air boxes.

Thanks a lot, one more question though, where did you get the elbow bit from?
elbow bits the normal series air intake one aint it?

If you mean the bottom bit that its bolted to the outside of the wing, I got that at a 4x4 jumble...but I daresay you can get them on ebay or whatever for a similar price. If you mean the bit that connects to the carb, it's the standard part :)

Given the fact I now own "Hayley" the A407 *** Series 3 SWB green/creme landy above now, and have done for several months, I can confirm what a bodge job has been done on the snorkel by one of the previous owners! Potentially "Grippa" or before as he has posted pics.

Nice job on the SS pipe and mushroom kit, but then bodged with the pipe hanging under the wing doing nothing! Something I failed to spot at purchase along with some other items.

This is now being properly rectified by fitting a used MOD air/oil bath filter housing which has the correct inlet and outlet pipes to connect to the standard 2.25 diesel. No good having a snorkel doing nowt, this could have resulted in some unhappy wading recently if I had'nt have spotted it!
