So, my little 1.8 k series 3 door freebie, is one of the more capable off road Freelanders in the country! It is what it is! A lot of fun! I'm not going to be doing a winch challenge event in it, I could have yet another fender or disco, well actually I have got a disco, but its the freelander that goes off road, thru deep water, boggy mud, green lanes etc etc? I like it! So there:D

When i follow my mate in his depender on green lanes i have to pick my route with skill and dexterity...he just drives straight over everything :D

Mine goes most places a defender will go unless its a modded one! It'll also go some places they can't!

Yep seems like you can mod a Freelander to be about the same as a stock defender, maybe a bit less, but more capable than a stock Disco 1. But when you do all the mods you're well into "capable off roader" territory. But you aren't going to beat a modded Defender or Disco, excpet in rare circumstances where the light weight of the FL goes in your favour :).

Mind you I've not owned any other LR so I don't speak with authority. Just going from what I've at the pay and play site :).

Both strategies have their virtues ;).

Indeed :)

his has a 3" lift on it, so dunt require much thought to evading even the biggest rocks. Unfortunatley for him the radius arms are for a 2" lift so he experiences some problems occasionally.
i think he's taking the springs off and fitting 2" bigger ones on to cure it.

Don't know if anyone on here went to the Somerley pay and play a couple of years ago but my dads Freelander (td4 commercial Auto 2 inch lift) got a lot of places where 'proper' Landy's couldn't. So much so that it got attention from one of the Landy mags. And yet when we go laning it's my Disco that's always there rescuing him. And it always seems to be 'fenders that rescue me. Freelander better than a Defender? No comparison.

That's the thing, there isn't a comparison! They're at opposite ends of the scale, yet both actually very good, a freelander is surprisingly good off road yet a fender is surprisingly bad on road! My point is why can't people just accept em for what they are? Most that slag em off have never been in one never mind off road in one!

That's my point I'm not saying Freelanders are bad just that they shouldn't be compared. Horses for courses n all that.

Freebies are not as capable as Defenders off road generally but far more capable than what most people think (in small doses)...

Firstly the doors dont always fall off when they get wet:

The can go places you'd never believe until you try (with a little help from the 'tratter boys)

Not a bad comparison between pretend freebie 4wd & real mans 4wd (freebie starts the run around 3mins in)

Ultimately though, as we all know, freelanders are made less of an off road vehicle due to poor ground clearance & the lack of a low box. After being taken out by the great guys of the North Yorkshire 'Laners around Holme Moss & Holmefirth, then a crawl up to Pigeon Tower at Rivington the following day I smoked my clutch & boiled the fluid. Managed to get off lightly & not replace the Dual Mass Flywheel but it was expensive all the same.

I've taken my freebie off road properly, surprised myself & all who were out with me what can be done in a "Gaylander" but it isnt tough enough to give it stick week in, week out & not as easy for DIY repair jobs like a Disco or 'Fender.

Horses for courses as somebody said, I love my Freebie for what it can do but I'm buying a Disco because I want something easily modified, with more aftermarket parts easily available, more robust & easier to work on.

I've had great fun in a standard TD4, only change I've made is a set of AT Grabbers.

Lots of love,

Nicky Clarke x

ya just need a new clutch after each off road experience... lol..

and that first video is mine, and the gaylander was photoshopped into the footage of an empty lane.... fraud, fraud, fraud....

How'd it cope coming up the rock steps further down?
I've run that lane many a time in a lbw and sub SIII, disco and a 90 but always down hill, I haven't had chance to do it in the freeby yet tho.

Not mine but some reasonably film from Parkwood/Tong ;)

Was a bloody expensive weekend! Over £400 to get the clutch fitted  had an aborted attempt to fit it myself but bottled out when I got 1/2 way through & realised that I couldnt drop the 'box just using ramps.

Hopefully around March I'll be looking for a D3 (yes I know they're not easy to work on!) & then I'll be able to tag along to a few more days out with you guys.

Had the use of a friends 'Fender X Tech a few weeks back, still love them after using it for a week but getting back in the freebie afterwards was like driving a luxury car so I think a Disco is a fair compromise for 'laning, pulling her horses about & my daily driver.
