Hi guys,

After replacing the turbo which had really done a number on itself i seem to have a bluey grey smokey issue with the old bus....It starts, ticks over sweetly dosnt seem to have lost any power. I can see no oil/water swappage all levels are good can't see/ hear any hoses leaking but i do seem to have a slight crankcase ghasping issue.

Crankcase filter is new
turbo is reconned and tested
oil/ filter are both new fully synthetic oil
Milage is getting on 85k

thoughts im having are..excessive blowby on piston rings?. Is my oil too light for the age/milage of the engine?. Smoking only starts towards say 2000 rpm below this its ok

Id be interested in your thoughts please guys and gals

did you clean out the intercooler when you changed your turbo?

Yes the intercooler was cleaned out with white spirit and hoses were all wiped through to ensure residue from old turbo failure had gone.

Does anyone know anything about the new bmw breather assy for the m47 engine? i understand they have completely done away with the little bog roll filter in the cam cover now...mebbe a trip to pick a bmw techs brain i feel

Hi did You get this sorted as my FL1 Td4 does the same initially I thought fuel because of the smell but on it's first road test today it ran sweet as a nut didn't turn the road white with smoke and overall I was really pleased but on tickover it smokes a bit smelling of oil not something I can't live with but irritating not to have an answer. If You look at my previous posts I did everything including injectors reconditioned and the BMW filter is fitted it was easy to do and does away with the little filter altogether cheap to buy too.

I have just done a full service on my fl1 changed air oil breather and fuel filters and oil on tick over it runs sweet but on the road it's like it is on fire can anyone help I also changed the fuel rail pressure sensor still no joy

You're better off asking in the Freelander section of the forum, by starting a new thread.

However smoke when driving is normally down to boost pipes problems.

Its more of a thick white smoke
Thick grey is often failed turbo seals, which can be accompanied by running on after turning off the engine, and they're will be lots of oil in the boost pipes.
White smoke is normally down to fouled injectors, often improving as the engine warms up, although not always.
Black smoke is always over-fueling, so is normally a split boost pipe, the elbow pipe at the EGR valve is a favourite for splits, but the RH boost pipe (left looking at the engine from the front) often wears a hole on a bolt, which is hidden underneath.

Blue smoke is the engine burning oil in the combustion chamber, so would be piston rings, valve guides and oil from the crankcase breather system.

Strangely oil from a failed turbo, seldom produces blue smoke, which is due to the larger amounts of oil actually adding combustion energy to the firing cycle, causing detonation, and grey smoke as a result.

After taking all pipes off to intercooler and turbo have eliminated it down to a turbo any know know a good cheap recon turbo car was at 1000rpm in pic
