Anyone ever fitted smaller wheels and tyres to a defender to reduce its height? I was thinking cheap off eBay

Before you think I'm crazy, basically I need to reduce the defenders height by about 3-6 inches to get it into the garage to work on it over the winter. The other option is to either dig up the garage floor or remove the garage door, which my other half is none too keen on.....

Not got a height issue once in the garage just need to get it in there, and just to be clear I don't intend driving it on the wheels more than to get it into the garage.

I knew somebody who put a set of really low profile (scrap) tyres on a set of 16" wheels in order to get it in his garage etc.
Worked a treat for him.

as above taking air out first, but yes you can stick smaller on to drop it a fair bit

or taking the roof off is pretty quick if you can get a hand

Yeah, get a cheap set of 15" wheels and crap tyres on run at minimal or no pressure .. 'specially if all you want 'em for is wheeling in and out of a garage, they don't 'need' air for that .. so long as the engine runs!! ;)

Thanks for the advice i'm working away right now so can't check the wheel \ tyre size but its not modified so standard rims, tyres suspension etc.

Think i'll keep an eye out for some crap 15" rims and tyres and try those, cant do rims only as it'll just sink into the drive.

incidentally, whats the lowest pressure i could get away with on the tyres without ruining them, or does that depend on the type type?

One of the original LZ members back YEARS ago put a set of scrap 15inch LR 8 spoke wheels on his and drove it into his garage like that - he later got some low profile tyres for them but he used wheels only to get in and out his garage for long enough - there will be photos here somewhere, I seem to remember the diff was about 2 inches from the ground.

Not all situations would allow this but his was all level and with the limited traction he was OK.

Mine wouldn't fit in the garage so I built a taller garage
😃no swapping rims for me lol ⚠️

Get some scrap rims and lay down some plywood or old scaffold boards to protect the drive. When done weigh the old rims in and have a beer or two.

Or......

Obtain (how you do this is up to you) the heavy duty castors off some wheelie bins and knock up some skates to sit the discs onto. Then you can take the wheels off altogether.
