Just got a disco 2 td5 auto, it seems very slow to hit top gear, traveling at 65mph with almost 3000rpm for a few minutes then suddenly it changes. God knows it's hard enough on fuel!

It probably is in top gear (4th) but the gearbox fluid has to be warmed up before the torque converter will lock-up and will give you direct drive (no slipping of the TC, then it's almost like it's gone into a '5th gear' )

Sounds just like what you are saying, will try oil change, or do you think it's more serious? Thanks for the reply's!

If the gearbox oils cold, the torque converter won't lock up. there 's Nowt wrong with it - that's just what they do!

Worth an oil and filter change anyway then you know where you stand (especially if it's new to you!) a lot can be said by the condition of the oil/sump magnet when you service the box.

Good luck :)

Thanks, that magnet thing speak of sounds interesting! Let's hope it's not full of bits. Defo worth a look!

It will most probably be covered in tiny metal filings/swarf which is perfectly normal wear and year of the gearbox, but there shouldn't be any bigger chunks of metal on it though ;)
