i have a land rover 110 with a j19 engine and gear box in my silly question is how do you put diff lock on and what is it used for ????? please help:confused::confused::confused:

Diff lock is put on by pushing small stick to the left. Make sure you push it right over or it will just go into a sort of neutral position. It's there to lock the centre diff to allow for 50% power to front wheels and 50% to the rear.

You can push it over to the left to in-gauge diff lock when your in either hi or low. But after you disengage diff lock you have to reverse a meter to take the stress from the gears.

Just push over to the left to engage. It is possible to do it whilst moving but I think (don't quote me on this) it is better to do it stationary, as in before you go to do something you might get stuck in.

lol does it need to be in neutral first ? and is it

a push to left then push up or down for gear or

b push over to left then pull back right and put into gear ?

sorry for the stupidness it does have a plate in the land rover that tells you only problem is that it only has about 4 words left that you can read lol

dont suppose could be a little more helpfull instead of mocking my lack of knowlage
when not in diff lock you can stand still with car in gear with just any one wheel spinning on a slippery surface with center diff locked both axles are driven so you need one wheel on each axle to spin to stand still ,dont use diff lock on high traction surfaces like the road unless its snowy etc ,pushing the hi/low lever to the left engages/disengages diff lock by compressing a spring in the transfer box so the fact levers across either way doesnt necessarily mean it is either in or out ,there is no neutral like there is for hi/low,light on dash should show when in lock ,you can check by jacking one front wheel up if it spins by hand its not in diff lock if it wont it is in diff lock ,linkage and bushes in ,often wear so lever doesnt comprees spring enough to engage it can be adjusted or repaired ,you can engage and disengage on the move ,hence the spring in box which will move selector when shafts line up ,but often after use it may need subtle clutching or even a little reverse to disengage depends on amount if any of wind up in the transmission

If the diff lock, locks the front to back in a 50:50 power split, what is the normal driving set up when the diff lock is not engaged?

There is no way to lock the diffs across the same axle is there?

50-50 unless one wheel spins then it takes it all ,you can buy axle diff lockers of many types ,manual locking or automatic ,limited slip etc google detroit or ashcroft lockers though there are many more maxidrive were the best imo not cheap but serious kit not necessary for most
