Shrieking...

It's that time again after a cracking weekend of Land Rover abuse at Tong, I've picked up a new noise on the Defender...

This time it's a crazy shrieking sound when you put your foot down even slightly. It does it more when it's in gear, but still makes a right noise before then.

It's had a small squeel for a little while now, but thought nowt of it. Until I take a screwdriver to it there's not much I can see, apart from the main belt on the fan smooth and shiny so looks worn (on the side nearest the engine).

I did go through a big smelly pond which was up over the fanny-flaps (forgot to close them too like a tit), but other than that I didn't do anything which would have resulted in a new noise.

Anyone got any ideas on the noise before I go stipping the thing down?

6 months into Landy-ownership and I've realised these fookers are like high maintenance girlfriends - the more sh*t they give you, and the more they cost you, the more you like the things!

fanbelt on my td5 always squeels if I get it wet and its new [fanbelt] but after 15-20 minutes driving it stops

I think it's something to do with that, but I reckon it's catching on something which is why it's making so much noise. I always get the 'wet squeel' too but that doesn't hang around for long.

what can it catch on apart from the gaurd and that would be easy to see. Tensioner?

Yeah, it does... There's also a slight flapping sound too, so I'm going to take a guess that that's something to do with it.

OK, what engine you got?

Does it do it if:

You declutch
You switch of the interior fan (no im not taking the ****!)
You turn the steering to lock and hold it there

The flapping sound would suggest that the engine's fan is dragging on the cowling, so possibly the bearings in that are failing? Depending on that engine you have, this could be your water pump

Could be the gearbox input bearing, but i would expect that to go away. Try declutching and selecting a gear, then without lifting up the clutch rev - does it still do it? And i realise, nobody likes the spanish inquisition!

Does the TD5 water pump also have the fan on the front of it?

erm!

It could be the studs have sheared on the exhaust manifold into the block.
Its a typical problem with TD5s that have been tuned or run at high speeds for a prolonged period of time.

I have this and it goes in on Thursday for the bolts to be replaced, does the noise sound like a fan belt squeal on acceleration but then disapears as the revs get up?..if so you may have the same thing.

Get an inspection lamp and look at the back of the engine where the manifold joins...if any studs have sheared you should see some sooty deposits on where the exhaust gases have been escaping from the sheared bolts....that is the cause of the shrieking on mine.

Tuned? High speeds? That sounds familiar...

I'll take a look around there and see if I can see anything. The fan felt still looks to have been rubbing, though that could be purely coincidental.

I thought it was the fan belt as well steve, changed it and still made the noise!!

discocuzzy, you were spot-on... There are two bolts missing and sooty stuff around there... I took it down to my local Land Rover guy and said "It's making a right noise, see if you can guess what it is..." to which he replied "Manifold bolts" before I even fired it up!

Just out of interest, what's yours going to cost? He's told me it's typically about £150 as it's got to go to the engineers for reskimming and stuff. Anyways, it's booked in on Wednesday...
