Not my car but trying help a friend.

He's just had the cam belt snap, damage is 5 rockers, 2 push rods, shredded belt to down to about 15mm wide and flange disintegrated/missing from crankshaft pulley.

This is the third time the belt has shredded.

The fuel injection pump was changed a few weeks ago but this should not have caused this issue.

I think it may be a distorted timing case but I've not seen it myself.

How would he go about checking the timing case ?

Is there anything else he needs to check ?

might sound silly but are you using the right kit.
i fitted a late kit to an early engine and left the washer behind the tensioner on. the new tensioner has the washer built in. this meant the tensioner fouled on the timing case cover and destroyed the belt.

they changed the guide from the idler to the crank on later kits to fix misalignment.

The new kit has been used.

I've gone through most of the reasons with him and this is the third time it's happened, which is why we think it maybe the timing case that's out of line.

just to check, you got a full one with a new crank with a guide? and removed the old idler and swapped with a one without a guide?

Yes.

If you read the first post again it states that the "flange disintegrated/missing from crankshaft pulley", we spoke about the possabilities of putting the old style guided tentioner on as well as the new type, but came to the conclution that if this was needed then something else maybe pushing the belt off line, hence asking about the casing.

read the first post.. you are

not had the issue myself, hopefully more knowledgable will be along :)

iirc there was also an injection pump bracket that was changed with the full modification kit.

Have you tried placing a straight edge over the pulleys and looking for gaps to see if any are misaligned?

Are you setting the belt tension using a dial torque wrench (11Nm iirc - but check)? Excess belt tension wont help things.
