Hello All, I have been fighting to get my 300tdi running right after a cambelt snap on the motoway. In the process of doing the belt I had to take off the cam pulley to get all the broken belt out but now I have a suspicion that the cam timing is out as its very sluggish and drinking fuel. Question is, how can I check the cam is in the right position as the gear is on a slotted tooth like the IP?

Many thanks

I'm no expert, having changed the belt just recently on my own tdi, there is a mark on the cam gear that should align with a mark on the casting. If you have the rocker cover off you should be able to check that the engine is at tdc, especially if you have the pin in the slot in the fly wheel ring gear, 3/16 drill I used, plus the crank also has a timing mark just above the shaft that should line up where the slot where the woodruff key fits.
I used a 9.5mm drill bit in the cam, made sure all the marks lined up, set the tensioner torque and tightened the Allen bolt in the tensioner, took the 9.5mm and 3/16bits out and rotated the engine twice - 720 degree - then checked all the above marking making sure the 9.5mm drill slides in easily, redo the torque set up and check settings again.
As an aside, when the belt failed did the engine sustain any other damage?
Good luck.
