Hello, I'm new to the site so apologies for any ignorances!
I've had 52 reg petrol for 7 yrs (72,000 miles), do low mileage but have had 2 head gaskets go... Parents have the TD4 and it's a dream but I spent £1300 on new tyres, head gasket, electric window last year and wonder if it will now be trouble free and should stick with it or 'upgrade' to TD4 spending around £3K to change. Would really appreciate advice. Many thanks.

You could possibly swap the wheels and tyres over. But having already had two head gaskets go I think it would be a wise move to take on the TD4. You didn't say what year the TD4 was.

Ps Welcome to the forum

If the head job is the full monty with MLS etc then stick with the petrol. The 1.8 is far less complicated than doozal, having only really one fault - it blows up! The petrol has a better spread of power - such as it is. I would not swop my petrol FL for a doozal FL. (well an FL2 perhaps:))

If your engine has had 2 head gaskets already then provided they were done correctly then there is a very good chance another will fail!! I love the K series but you would be getting a better engine with the td4. As to weather it will be cheaper in the long run is anybody's guess, particularly if the injectors or gearbox fails!!

In a lazy git......not really, I drive an auto disco at work and find 1st a bit 'tall' on my manual hippo. sometimes better starting in 2nd.

Mean't petrol vs doozal. No matter, just interested. I would never buy another FL1 myself regardless of engine type, transmission etc. Time for a change!!

Agree re starting in 2nd - almost every time for me.

apart from I always set off in 1st on the flat or going uphill, second for setting off on a slope :)

Sorry did you say something I was distracted by your girl in the purple !

Yeh me too. Dammit Freelaner!!!

Personally if the 1.8 is a nicer spec than the TD4 then I'd keep it. If the head goes again just get a low mileage rover 1.8 engine from ebay (£250 ish) and swap the specific LR parts (like the sump) over to it.

Some are just bad, but also some are just good. Diesel Do has one at 90k that's got it's original choccy gasket but is 2001 spec so has all the other mods :).

I have to say, last weekend was the first time mine's been in ruts and mud and your can batter the **** out of the 1.8 and it just doesn't stop. I was shocked at how much power it has in 1st.
