Currently have a 1998 Range Rover 4.6 hse with 126k on the clock, AND a blown engine..liner has dropped. Cheapest quote todate £2495 plus VAT and sundries ( inevitably another £500 in parts alone I guess). Car isn't worth more than £2000 I believe and 15 miles to the gallon has been hitting me hard over last 12 months. But I have loved it as a motor for last 2 1/2 years despite regular problems, half the fun was looking up answers and fixes via this site, and ebay!!!!!!!!! Its a great car but financially a killer...I'd like to stay with land rover if possible, but need comfort, relaibility(!!?) and something newer that can still haul, dog, student kids and gear and shopping all at the same time for a budget of £3-£4k tops

On offer is a 2003 Freelander 1.8 5-door Kalahari model. with 39k on the clock. Dealer service history seems logged All seems well, drove well enough ..OK...not a RR V8 mind, but so be it...I need a motor quickly.

Priced at £3991 on second hand dealer forcourt. Was up at £4991 but that was a **** take...he's looking to shift metal now as credit crunch is biting. said price non negotiable and no part-ex. I will pay cash anyway for a vehicle.

What is fair price to offer? Have looked up the head gasket problem and general reliability on various sites. Am I buying into a sh*T load of problems? Did LR ever solve the HGF problem by 2003 or is it going to happen soon to this vehicle. Sure as eggs I cannot find a lot of good opinions on this vehicle, yet still see plenty around.....input appreciated.:decision: Cheers

dont buy it - get a Disco instead.

I agree with the other guys, get a TD4, plenty around just make sure you have a good look around, its a buyers market.

If you do go for a petrol one try and get a long warranty with it and get someone who knows a thing or 2 about them to check it before you buy. We have heard some horror stories on here about second hand car dealers. Yeah gaylanders have their problems but my wife bought the new punto, had a new engine and gearbox before it even reached 4000 miles. You can never tell whats going to go tits up.

I paid 900 for a 2001 3 door 1.8, replaced the HG as a precaution. Its immaculate so bargains to be had.

Good luck

Please please please don't even consider a petrol Freelander. Not only did they never properly cure the Head gasket issue (though improved gasket kits are available) but they also suffer from the dropped liner problem which killed your Rangie. Only consider a diesel model, Td4 being the BMW engined model. Whilst there are a few issues, most are easily sorted & the Td4 makes a good economical car. Discoveries whilst more hard core 4x4 are far better than petrol freelanders.

good morning.

id definately unless its a tdi would not ever recommend even to my worst enemy a freelander aside fromm all the pretty offroad junk on it thats the bes selling point there.

as a guy living in the U,S parts and fuel are an issue i own both a disco and a range rover

my range is new 08,, no issues ive owned three county lwb from 95 to 99
and had the regular heating headgasket sleeve failures on all of them

'even the new one 99. i would recomend if you want good gas milage and reliabilty with kid hauling get a disco tdi there are plenty around my current khalihari 1 discovery has had extensive work and money thrown at it so i dont have to walk or catch a cab anytime i drive now. and with kids and a dog ,, who wants to do that.

there arent many here in the states or i would have one. so recap i think the boys on here and they were meaner to me ..i allmost cried they were so unfriendly.lol

are right to tell you stay away from the pretty freelander thay are junk and at people who want a real lnadrover but cant afford one or havent actualy looked at the mechanical issues that are inherant in the gas ones

hope you make the right choice besides i think a disco 2 seats seven

mine has those cute little jump seats i stick my kids back there behind the dog barrier makes em feel like i threw them in jail ..

take care.

as far as the motor issue i dont kbow what the availability is out there theres tons of them here i replaced my motors at least twice before i had the machine work done to change the sleave problem.
im afraid its part of owning a chevy slash rover product .. i had my sleaves bored out and input chevy 305 stepped sleves had them machined to the block and bored to 4,0 spec and changed the rods and pistons to 4,0 it cost me about three grand, but i hav no heating or cooling issuse or blown head issues it was worth it considering but considering i off road in places you dont want to trodd out of ,, i had too in your case id just buy another used engine swap it change to a new radiator and thermostat to 165 and make sure you have the right coolant that will keep u on the road anther 70 k or 80 k ,, the problems with the freelander are too many and parts are harder to get for those little things theyve completely changed the product line
at least here and that im sure translates to a tight parts market even for ebay shoppers...

take care.

Yeah, we'd all like to know what he's prattling on about.
One bit I did get was his whine about fuel prices, I mean he lives in the US of bloody A for christ sake. He wants to try paying what we were a couple of months ago before thinking about mentioning fuel prices. Even our prices now would shock him & we're all relieved they've come down so much.
