A friend has been offered an n reg Range Rover. It has air suspension. Well what it has is suspension which should be filled with air. :) When lifting it up on the ramp today for a look underneath one of the air bags went woooossshh. On examination it was deflated and two of the others look to be on their last legs. One is clearly new. Is it a big job to fix? Said friend has experience as a mechanic and has a ramp, tools etc. Is there a How to anywhere? That's problem one.

Problem two is it is stuck in 4x4 which has mangled the UJ on the prop. How do you disengage the diff lock?

Problem three is a series of fault warnings on the dash:
SRS error
Sunroof fault (however it works fine)
Back passenger window fault (also works fine)

Can these be reset?

Given the problems, in particular the air suspension is it worth a punt?

Thanks for any help.

Bin the bags and fit springs.

Faults can be reset via appropriate software/laptop or a visit to a landy garage.

Int never owned a RR so haven't got a fooking clue where diff lock lever/button/switch/pull cord??? is located..

Firstly, I'd say how much is he going to pay for this vehicle? If its a freebie, or really cheap, then its probably worth the trouble, but if its top dollar, its not, there are much better kept ones out there.

The Air suspension can be sorted relatively easily with knowledge gained from the CD manual and lots of the guys on here, by anyone who is mechanically minded but I'd be much more worried about the state of the engine in the car if there are so many other signs of disrepair - I'd check the engine on a Rangie of this age vary carefully indeed, no use spending ££££ on air suspension etc if the engines on its last legs.

The sunroof fault and window fault sound like they have not been reset properly after a battery change. You need to follow the procedure in the manual which is basically opening and closing them fully, at which time the "not set" messages should go away. The SRS light may be on from the binnacle being removed ?? to change blend motors or heater O rings??? and then the ignition being turned on before connecting it again. It needs Test Book / Rovercom / Faultmate/ dealer diagnostics to reset it. It may also be an SRS fault, but either way, it needs diagnostics.

The transmission fault sounds expensive  to me but I'm sure someone will be along to advise on it!!

Best advice: if this one's free or very cheap then its probably worth a look but check the engine first!!!! If its over £1000 I would give it a miss, there are much better examples out there in much better mechanical condition!!!

the gearbox and transfer box is all controlled from the gear lever in the cab. its all electronic so if it wont select gears i would look at the electrofeckery on the gearbox. if it just wont select hi range then it could be more sinister!

A set of OEM Dunlop Airbags are available from "Island 4x4" for 240 quid plus 10.00 quid for the retaining clip set.
Also you can purchase a special OB11 lead to connect a laptop to the vehicle to find/reset suspension faults and the best bit is the suspension software is a totally free download. So the suspension shouldn't cost much more than 270.00 to fix...:)

A P38 is constant 4 wheel drive and the transfer case difflock is automatic, has the viscous coupling definately siezed or has the wrong oil been use in to transfer case?

There could be various causes for the above, from a flat battery/dirty electrical connection to some expensive-ish parts, you will just have to work your through them and yes they can be reset but not with the cheap software programs available on the net.

The air suspension isn't a problem provided you fit new parts, the system is simple to work on, a coil spring conversion kit will set you back just as much if not more than repairing the air system.

Is worth a punt, yes at the right price

He says the middle diff is definitely locked and the transmission feels like it's "winding up." As you say the wrong oil could have been used previously. Given the above what do you think the damage is likely to be? The vehicle purchase price is around £1500

First thing you should do is download the complete parts listing program and workshop manuals, long downloads (1200Mb in total) but a good point to begin from The Green Oval

You should be able to pickup a s/hand transfer case for about 250.00 or price up new parts from a main stealer or an Internet parts dealer.

Changing the transfer box is fairly easy even with the vehicle on the floor, I'd reckon 3 hours max, with access to a ramp, I'd bet a main stealer's fitter could do it in less than an hour.

It all depends how well you know/trust the history of the vehicle, I'd always consider a known vehicle with faults, against a totally unknown vehicle with faults to come, if you get my drift.

Suspension and transfer box will cost 500/600 quid approx to sort, any other problems are an unknown cost. It all depends on the History, the overall condition of the vehicle and how much you want to invest in this vehicle, get prices for the parts.

At the moment the seller has a vehicle that is un-drivable and he knows it going to cost him.

If you trust the person selling the vehicle and trust the history of it, point out the known faults, make an offer allowing for parts and labour against the asking price.

I'd take a punt at 700/750 up to 900 max, but remember I can do the labour part so you may have to factor this in, at the end of the day buying a s/hand motor is always a gamble.

I've owned ratty motors that you just can't kill, but others that look good and cost a small fortune.
