buy a toyota- a land rover is a continuous fettling project

Hi..good choice!

If you're going to be just tootling about and using the landy for leisure activitys then you should be able to get a cracking early 90 for 3k.

You will probably be looking for something 1984-1990 with a 2.5N/A diesel in it...not the fastest (60-65mph) but a bulletproof engine that will require little but regular maintenance.

Take your time, i've bought lots off ebay and after a while you get to know what to look for...forget all the bling, go for as standard as possible with a good chassis and bulkhead...make sure the electrics all work as they can be bodged over the years.

Don't worry about mileage, it will be nearly 30 years old. See if theres any history in the form of garage receipts or more likely receipts for parts the owner has replaced.

Look carefully at the front bulkhead below the windscreen and around the door hinges for rust.

Do a full service as soon as you get one so you know its really been done..expect around 20-25mpg average.

Good luck!

Should just add cos i can see series71 lurking..lol...you may want to also consider a tidy series with that money..try and find one with overdrive.

Depending on your abilitiys with tools you're in the bottom end of 200tdi territory...you can find them for less than 3k but they will need a bit more work than a 90/series and wont be in as good condition.

Nope, do not buy a LR90, buy something that'll just be a vehicle you will get in and drive, not one you want to get attached to.
