So i bought my little landy knowing full well she was going to test me. I hadn't expected her to test my skills and my patience (& wallet) quite this much though. Good job I'm completely smitten or i'd have burned her sacrificially!

She very seldom produces any power. She starts fine, idles fine, doesn't overheat. She drives like she's not boosting though. If i'm on a dual carriageway and there's long incline she'll slow right down to about 40mph - the lorry drivers LOVE having to overtake when driving up hills!

Sometimes, once she's warmed up and usually when i've been sitting in traffic, she'll boost as she's meant to and catapult me towards the back of the vehicle in front. She'll boost properly for a few pokes of the throttle but soon returns to her dawdling ways.

Works carried out whilst under my ownership include but are not limited to: 1x new injector, 3x injectors cleaned and copper washers replaced, new MAF sensor inc housing, new boost solenoid, new turbo vent filter, new turbo cartridge, new cam position sensor, new inlet hoses, inlet manifold cleaned out, intercooler cleaned out, ports in cylinder head cleaned out, air filter replaced, oil & filter replaced, fuel filter in offside rear wheel arch replaced, EGR delete kit fitted.
That's just the stuff I've done pertaining to this post. If i remember anything else, i'll add it later.

I'm going to order a length of silicone vacuum hose and replace all of the tired old stuff too. I've seen it rub through on other peoples cars over the years. I've checked it all myself (by blowing through it) but i can't accurately imitate the pressures and temperatures created by a running diesel engine.

So!
My question is this; if i replace the vacuum hoses and she still doesn't boost.... What's next!?

I really don't relish the idea of tearing her apart and reconditioning the injector pump.... Just saying.

Vac pipes are the first thing to change. ;)
If it's still not boosting after those have been changed. Then look at the MAP sensor to check for clogging.
Have you checked all the live data on a diagnostic tool?

At the risk of being laughed at.... No, i have yet to plug her in and see what's occurring. I don't have a diagnostic gameboy thing, a friend of mine does but he warned me off buying a freelander originally so i'm loathe to go and see him :D
 
It's always best to do a diagnostic before throwing money at a problem.
An acceptable diagnostic tool can cost as little as £90. But as it can save you many times its cost because you aren't buying things that ain't broke, it's a wise investment;)

So vac pipes and MAP sensor next ;)

I'll bite the bullet and go see my bud with the Snap-On gameboy as soon as i've done the vacuum pipes.

Hi, not trying to put a dampner on the issue any further, but when my vac pipes were cracked and not sealing (it was the pipe running along the injectors and down the back of the engine) my brakes were crap, really crap, up to the point where if you tried to press the brake pedal twice quickly, you had NO brakes on the second press. On the plus side i found 8m of vac pipe on fleebay for under a tenner delivered.

I see you've changed the boost solenoid, but you can check if it's getting vacuum, power and actually operating the turbo vanes by getting someone to rev the engine and watching it through the driver's side wheelarch. It should move about 20mm.

If you're on your own, you can press the throttle with a stick through the driver's window and watch it at the same time.
 
As above, MAP sensor would be my first opinion. Secondly it could be the low pressure fuel pump dying.
But check the rest:)

I think i may have already replaced the MAP sensor.... I have all the old parts in a box so i'll have a rummage and see if there's a MAP sensor in there.
The low pressure fuel pump is quite loud. I was listening to it the other day when i replaced the fuel filter and thinking that maybe it'd be worth replacing. I thought maybe it was just loud because you're not used to hearing it run with no arch liner.
