The old girl performed faultlessly on our trip to Spain.Didn't use a drop of water (temp 38+ in central Spain) Covered 2,700 miles at an average of 22.4 MPG (worked out not trip comp)
Below is a comparison between driving and flying (4 people). We had 2 stops both ways (2 rooms each time). These were the cheapest flights we could find, but I'm sure a low fare expert could do better.
DRIVING
Ferry(Newhaven to Dieppe) £205.00
Petrol (approx £1.10 to the Euro) £585.00
Tolls £115.00
Hotels £340.00
Total £1,245.00
FLY and HIRE
Air Fare x4 £744.00
Car Hire (family saloon) £325.00
Total £1,069.00
As you can see its cheaper to fly and hire, but we look at the drive as part of the holiday. Roads in France and Spain are a doddle compared to the UK and to cover 600 miles a day is a breeze (could easily do more especially in a Rangie) At one point on a toll road between LeMans and Angers at 10am on a Monday morning I was the only vehicle as far as the eye could see, driving heaven
We gave the old girl some TLC before the trip, which included
1) New EBC pads and discs all round
verdict: stop really well but not as much feel as I was expecting
2) 4 new boge shocks
verdict: improved overall ride and handling, but I guess the old shocks were not as shot as I thought, because only a marginal improvement.
3) 4x General Grabbers UHP
verdict: exellent, one of the best mods I've ever done. Great comfort and virtually silent without a hint of tramlining, at £100 a corner all in, great value to.
Plans for an upgrade to a MKIII have been put on hold for now. The P38 has put a smile back on our faces.
Hope this helps someone who may be considering the driving option. If you have time on your hands I would recommend it. The combination of European roads and a P38 is superb.
