Shall I buy a Freelander?

Hi guys,

I've noticed most posts here are more technical questions but I thought this was the right forum anyway.

Basically I am about to graduate from Uni and at the moment I am driving an old Punto and I am looking to buy something more manly lol.

I was looking at I have seen that the older Diesels are much much more expensive than the petrols, I know this is because of fuel economy but I also heard this is because of problems in the petrol model. - Is this true?

So I am looking to buy a Diesel Freelander, maybe year 2000 with a budget of around £3000 (up to £4000 if its the perfect car). I would expect mileage of 60.000 - 90.000 and want the 5 door version. Black would be my favourite colour also.

So my question is, would the car I described be available in my price range and would it be a 'good' reliable car?

NO a petrol engined car would not be a reliable car Petrol engined Gaylanders are ****E!! do not buy one.

For that money you could get a good disco. or a defender, and have a proper 4x4

I read it he asked if it were true about petrol gaylanders. been ****e. I was answering that bit of the question.

the black ones are definitely the most reliable

I dont think the colour will make a difference if its black, blue , purple and so on you've just got to accept that freelanders have a few problems and can be pricey to repair if you dont know the mechanical side of it. So yeah freelanders are not everyones cup of tea but when running problem free are nice to drive

in 12mths of ownership me mates as cost him just over a grand in repairs,his mot was due it needed more money spent on it for a pass.

I just mentioned the colour to be more specific, I know it wont make a difference to the car. My real question was will a Diesel Freelander be a reliable car to drive...

its better than either petrol - but still suffers all the freelander generic faults, except the engine related ones - ie.

chassis cracking
rear subframe mounting breaking.
VCU
rear diff mounts.

plus a couple of (hose/turbo) probs just fur the diesel.

TD4 is the most reliable so therefore the most expensive to buy used. But if your lucky you might find one for £4k

couldnt agree more

I drive a Discovery which my wife found to be too big for her, she bought herself a new Freelander 5 years ago, it has only covered 42000miles but that said other than a service once a year it has never been in the garage, one of the most reliable cars she has owned, the one before that was a Mazda and never out the workshop.
Incidentally I don't drive her car, don't mind sitting in it though on the way home from the pub as long as its dark

aye if yer twist it about alot, stand on yer head and drink a few tins of brasso then yer answer could be specific to the bit about petrol gaylanders. otherwise it dint really answer his question which was about the price difference and not whether petrol ones was ****ter than the not petrol ones.
