Shall I buy a Freelander?

Before you buy a Freelander, I suggest you read the (rather long) thread on preloved.co.uk search for the thread "freelander head gasket failure", where there is a lot of info on both petrol and diesel models. I wish I had read this before I bought mine!!!! (mine was a petrol)

I've read this before and is full of vitriol from non-mechanically minded people who don't know a K-series from a L-series.

The L-series and TD4 are no more likely to suffer HGF than any other car with a head gasket!

In a thread about the potential purchase of a diesel Freelander, WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BRING UP HEAD GASKET FAILURE?????!

I fail to comprehend why, so I think I will go for a spin in our TD4, which in 65,000 miles of motoring has had one failure - a wiper linkage that was repaired in five minutes with a cable tie.

Or shall I take out the 1998 L-series, which has been heavily off roaded, perhaps is even the MOST OFF ROADED Freelander ever? And despite being a very early model (and therefore originally equipped with fallable transmission components) continues to be a reliable and enjoyable drive.

The fact is, if someone asks for buying advice, particularly for a diesel Freelander, they should be able to leave the forum with good buying advice ... and the proviso that if they ever develop any problems - which you can with any model of car - we're here to diagnose them.

Cheers

Blippie

Yep well said the Blips. . . . . slaggin orft the gaylander is mostly tratter boys havin fun on this site ,but they will help ya when chips are down, its er good motor ,td4 un ole l series carnt be beaten in its class, we all know most the faults now ,and we know how to fix them,i'm biased anyhows cos i like all lr motors, sure i take the mick outa the tratters un the tratter boys luv it , un dunt get all upset . . . .but newbies , un slitty drivers , now thats a different story spit!!!!:D :D ;)

Yes well said blippie... but if you look over your shoulder about a mile and abit to your left, you might see the point of my post ;-) :)Good buying advice is good buying advice even if it doesnt "fit" with your opinion. There is enough "expert" opinion both for and against DIESEL freelanders, and as a potential buyer that asks for such advice/opinions, then surely pointing him in the direction of ALL such web sites is EXACTLY what he asked for. But then again I'm a newcomer to this website and didnt realise I have obviously transgressed and apologise profusely!!!!

To be accurate, and in the spirit of giving a full response to the original question... Hasnt the Head Gasket problem in the petrol 1.8 also been fixed for face lift 2004> FL1's ?Therefore rendering the statement, "all petrols are crap" another rubbish bit of advice ?

i would get one ive a Td4 52 plate, the only thing i have had wrong with it in 15mnths of ownership is leaky back door and a blown turbo hose !!! its reasoable off road (i use a defender at work and used to own a 300tdi disco) and quiet on road
