Well its not quite rattle and roll....

Could anyone help? Ive just bought a 2001 1.8 GS. Love the motor, its great fun to drive but im just hoping my problem doesn't set me back too much.

When bought the tyres were shocking, so I put 4 x good year wrangler on and had them balanced and tracking done. Driving through town I was falling in love with my new purchase. Up to 50 mph, great. At just over 50 mph it starts to wobble, not the steering but the car. At 60 it becomes really really bad. I figured at first balancing had been incorrectly done so put my foot down and at 80mph wobble reduced. Right I thought, balancing. Took it to a different garage as obviously the first one had lost my confidence. Arrived at "kwik fit". "Yes" they said "all 4 tyres were at least 20g out with one out by 35g". £21 later set off for the motorway, guess what.........yep exactly the same problem.

Please can anyone give any suggestions, could both garages have cocked it up (for search of a better phrase). Or is this something completely different. Like I said before up to 60 its fine even if i accelerate quickly.

Many thanks

Alan.

cud be rear chassis crack/rear subrframe attachment/rear diff mounts or gubbered VCU.

Doobrey will be along later to tell yo that yu are imagining it all. Hippoos are fantastic motors, with no faults.

Thanks for that, but i would expect knocking sounds with those problems? The vehicle remains quite just feels like its trying make milkshake. it is worrying though that its not the steering wheel but entire car.

presumably it dint do the washin machine impressions afore yer swapped the tires ?

try swoppin em front to rear an see if that helps.
they are known to chuck wobblys when yer change tires

no pun intended!

Obviously not quite as green as some, MHM, very nice to see you aint told the poor git to burn it as that seems to be you normal answer. Seems like after first post he has obviously more knowledge of freelander than you .... None of your suggestion/guesses sound anything like... symptoms described do sound like a wheel balance problem.

Have yet to see/hear any rear subframe mount or cracked chassis that dont have a distictive cracking noise especially on low speed turns. To give vibration described it would need to be hanging off from mounting bolts (maybe worth a check just in case MHM mechanics have been at it) and would imagine that would make cracking noise too.

Rear diff mount (any of 3 but normally front) will give a thud when accelerating/decelerating/changing gear and when shot completely can feel like you are being kicked in back.

VCU can/will wear tyres (possible reason why old ones were fooked) but if these are new tyres (presume new and not part worn) then would take a while to start again.

Other suggestions not from a fook-wit whos had his ass spanked (MHM) could be.

Cheapest, you could have got a bad tyre i.e. not round or with a bulge in sidewall, can be caused by bad moulding process or storage, so would have a look at that first. This will normally not be picked up by balance machine unless operator is watching for it.

Could be a worn/unbalanced driveshaft or prop shaft normally comes in at around 30 then dissapears around 50 but can be worse.

Hope that helps.

It was a wobble tastic car when i bought it but got money off for new tyres all round......assumed at the time that because all 4 were ragged it would solve the issue having new ones. Maybe i just got a bit excited and assumed too much. Anyone idea on costs if it is one of the pre discussed issues?

Oh aye ! nearly fergot

look at the vcu and see if it still has a rubber covered ballance weighty thingy on the rear end give it a tug and see its still intact !
ie the ruber aint peelin away from it!
Then drop the whole vcu off an see if that cures it !

Not all built with the rubber thingamabob so if not there and no signs there ever was one dont worry... could well be problem though..

2001 So it should have one accordin t my testical manwell !

Totally agree says so in mine too, tried explaining to my motor and even asked if it wanted one for Xmas but says its never had on fitted coz its an early 2001... (its was giggling somthing at the time ref Gordon Browns new Tax):D

Im going to throw a spanner in the works now im afraid. Yesterday no wobble up to 60, today I can feel it from 30.....maybe im just being a bit paranoid....nah, its def starting earlier, the more ive got use to the car the more i can feel it. Still, quite as a mouse though, no knocking scraping squeaking at all. My dad has just taken it out for a second opinion and he says its coming from the wheels directly into the car as hardly any wobble on the steering wheel. Confused......I am now. LR garage here i come. What a romantic start to my new love.

Are you sure the KF fitter has tightened your wheels up properly... need spethial qualifiathions to work there:eek:

lol mate, yeah ive used a torque bar.....thanks for PM too. The guy who checked it looked like he had just done an oil change until i realised he must have forgotten to wash that morning with clearasil. (sorry unsure of spelling)

I wernt joking ... I have had my wheels balanced coutesy of a kwik twit nutter before now and after providing my own tools (as they didnt have deep enough socket) and been told they were back in the box ... went to drive off only to find that 1 side not tight and other another wheel had actually been seated wrong and was completely wonky.

Went to get tools to sort out...little sh1t hadnt mentioned they were in his tool box.

Needless to say I did refuse the free service offered by way of apology

Ive been looking on net now for hours, the more research i do the more i worry this could be IRD, VCU or prop shaft......there would be noises though - please tell me their would be noises??????? Maybe i should go to tesco car park after dark and drive round in circles in reverse! After paying my fine to the police i'll at least know if its VCU or not. Assumin i'm right in thinking i would have to increase throttle if VCU is goosed? Wish i knew a mechanic. Still im not disillusioned, i still love the car and dont care if it cost a bit to get right. Love does the strangest things dont you find.
