i went to a local land rover dealer yesterday and asked how much it would cost to get my 1967 land rover ambulance a full service. i was quoted around £800     how can these people justify that??????

the parts alone wouldn't be anywhere near £200. i know labour charges are expensive but what a rip off. i'm going to do it myself. i used to be a mechanic many moons ago and i've got a haynes manual. i just couldn't believe it.

£800 now thats a rip off as you say do it your self a hell of a lot cheaper

They probaly quoted that coz they dint wanna do it
you've got to be kidding. as soon as i turned up, they came out of the office and workshop to look her over and the mechanics were even arguing over who was going to do the service. so it's a case of going to a motor factors and getting all the parts and doing it myself. bollocks to them.

Thats it sirjj your gettin the hang of this. Like grippa said if you do it yourself at least you know its done and you have the satisfaction of doin it despite what yer doris thinks :D

Where abouts is it holy? You can get egg-sauce "repair bandages" I wouldn't use them forever, but a good fix til you've got the cash spare.

What did you think a "Full Service" is?
Is it the same as the garage thought it is?
Some people think a full service is change the engine oil and grease the propshafts, others may think it is change all the oils, including brake fluid, renew brake seals, brake linings, oil all hinges, totally valet the vehicle inside and out etc. Obvious they will each have very different ideas about how much it will cost. Even things like whether you are buying the cheapest oil from Tesco and they are using high quality synthetic can make a difference.
When greeting a quote from a garage, or more important before letting them start a job, make sure you both agree what they are going to do.
people will ask a garage to do fix everything, then moan because they spent hours (£s) tracking down a rattle from the dashboard.

the landy has only done 39000 miles and i asked for a 40,000 mile service. i didn't ask for any extras, just the full sevice on the engine and to top up the oil in the gearbox, check the brakes and to grease all the grease points.

as for the exhaust, it looks like it's blowing from the head. the stud is just spinning around and i've put a bolt in for the time being. it looks like it might need a heli-coil in a couple of places. not a massive job but it's still going to bleedin cost a fortune though. i'm going to take it to my local exhaust centre on monday and they said they would have a look for me to see if the exhaust is only blowing from there. it looks in good nick so hopefully it's only where the exhaust meets the manifold. the problem is, the exhaust fumes are coming into the cab so its a case of it's got to be done.

as for a rattle from the dashboard, it's a 41 year old land rover. it's like a lambretta, they were born to rattle. i think it adds to the character.

i went to Hi.Q today so they could have a look at my exhaust. they said it isn't blowing from the head but where the manifold meets the exhaust. i've got it booked in for friday to get it done. whilst i was there, i asked for a quote for a service. £120 that's much better than the £800+ i was quoted at guy pilchards.
