Today was Hippo day. Here's what I got up to and a few questions as well.

Firstly I have had a problem with a severe rattle. It comes from the bulkhead area, its rev related and kicks in between 2100 and 2600 RPM, it doesn't occur when the engine is cold, only happens slightly when the engine is hot and happens very much so after about 15 minutes of the air con running. I had already noted that the exhaust heat shield was loose so thats all strapped up now, but that didn't stop it. So today, off came the undertray, followed by about three pounds of mud. Now it seems strange, but it doesn't rattle any more.

Next, the anti rool bar bushes seem to knock, I noticed, when driving on rough roads. So off them came for an inspection. Bit worn so for now I slapped some grease into them and re-fitted until I can get some new ones. Still knocking a bit, but not as bad.

Next, rear brakes are long over due an inspection. Got as far as getting the wheels off and the retaining screws out, well three of them anyway, some kind sole had stripped the head of the forth one and I had no choice but to drill that one out. Now on to removing the drums. Problem, I can't get them off. Okay, so they've got a wear step and the shoes are holding them. Consulted Haynes. Remove the grommet from the rear plate and release the wear adjuster so to leat the shoes back off from the drum. Great, How?? I couldn't see what I was supposed to do here. Eventually gave up to find the answer before I broke something.

Next, the coolant is long over due a change. Had the new stuff for a while but not got round to it. So dumped the old stuff into a bucket by releasing the lower rad hose connect to the oil cooler. Flushed the system three times, what a mess it was in. Took the expansion tank out and gave that a good clean too. Once done I refilled with 5 litres of coolant. Following that I have topped up with another two litres as the air clears.

While working on the ARB bushes I noticed the gearbox was covered in oil. This appears to be coming from the turbo. Its difficult with oil leaks to determine the source but as far as I could tell it was from the joint in the pipe from the air cleaner where it joined to the compressor input. As a result some serious work insued. The air cleaner assembly, including the MAF was removed, the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler was removed, the pipe from the turbo to the waste gate diaphram was removed, the pipe to the MAP sensor was removed. All parts were cleaned and inspected. I found just as much oil in the MAF side pipe as the intercooler pipe, so my fears over the state of the turbo oil seal were calmed. Everything was reassembled.

Finally I removed the induction casting. The casting, the induction manifold and the EGR pipe were coated in oily gunk, especially the EGR side. A major clean out resulted followed by reassembly. This has done some good as the engine no longer hunts on idle as it has been doing for a while.

Jobs still to do.

The drivers door has stopped unlocking on the remote but does work on the key, the solenoid is felt to operate so the problem is mechanical and not the CCU.

There is a noticable clunk, when the power is ramped up, coming from the rear of the car. The subframe is okay so I suspect a diff mount.

Then I've got these brakes to check out, if I can get into them that is.... :D

Well, this flippin rattles back, and the under tray is still off.

Had a thought about it based on that it only really rattles after the air con has been on a while. Therefore it can't be core engine but must be mechanically part of the engine.

So I thought about the fuel pump tensioner bearing. The two guide / tensioner bearings on the main timing belt were goosed last year and replaced. This one was not and has to have the same amount of work on it. So it was off with the belt cover and checked. Even did the old trick of using a screwdriver to listen to the bearing. No, don't seem to be that. I'm stumped on this one. :confused2:
