series pto (rocking horse poo)

i really want to find a pto for my 1959 series 2. does anyone have any ideas as to how i might find one and any advise on fitting and using on or what to look for, faults, i know very little about them but want to run a small baler off of it so i don't have to cart the massey everywhere. thanks

You don't see them images in the land rover brochure nowadays!

Did anyone really try using them for crops?

brilliant dippy ,yes i remember people using them ,they werent cheap ,and in competion with fregie,but 60hp tractor wasnt little then

i know a couple of old boy farmers who say they used series 1s to top, mow, ted and bale but they arent all there any more so can never tell if its true or not but there was a pic in one of the mags a couple of years ago of a series 1 pulling a 2 or 3 furrow plough

Expect to pay a small/large fortune for the PTO AND check carefully as they are prone to breaking their aluminium castings ...Also you wont be able to have an over drive AND PTO unless you can find a Bottom PTO ...made out of solid unobtanium .

thought they would prove hard to find have been looking on and off for a couple of years. is there anyone who makes new ones? in this instance money isnt too much of a worry, i want a pto and have an excuse to get it past the missus and if i have to i'll sell the massey 35x i just restored

your field could be a play ground rather than work still possible to find a reaper bar ,and i know were theres a vicon acroat tedder

Ken is over here BTW ...though i'm not sure how often he looks in (OLLR kidnapped him some time back, and you never paid the ransom of two bottles of Irn bru and a batch of deep fried Mars bars,so we kept him )

We got one for the 1949 series 1. It took about 10 years of watching eBay and buying it bit by bit - the prop was actually found in cradock's parts bin!!!

thinking out the box here a bit
(normal for me, as me brains gorn to grey matter)

could not a PTO device not be used on "one" hub,
say, take the wheel off, & bolt a PTO device on while landie was jacked up one side?
I realise wheel chocks would be needed.

or, why cannot PTO`s be fabricated to run from front pulley easily ?

but then I suppose, now hydrulics run most things, it`ll be easier to mount a pump to run PTO`s.

for idea 1, you could ony use it stationary, a PTO might be used to power towed machinary, think balers etc.

idea 2, you wouldnt get the torque.

I think you may be confusing a PTO with a hydraulic pump for hydraulic winces etc, these can indeed be run from a PTO or engine mounted. Power Take Offs frequently drive a shaft for machinery etc, the pic in the link has a belt drive unit attached for driving stationary equipment.

maybe my mechanicle brain only sees mechanicle things,
and not the bigger picture.
(too many years on the tools)

my son has just come in and read this fred.
he said, do i remember the old landie fire engine they had at the stapleford (essex) air strip, having PTO`s for water pumps....
wonder what happened to that 11 years ago, when it was replaced with a yank tank fire truck.

This link from my first post is for a PTO supplier ...

I think given suitable drawings and a bit of brainstorming, you could cobble a prototype up ...

same goes for that 3-point linkage ...
