Well, here we are, at another series rebuild thread. A little back story for the old girl i suppose is needed here.

Well, GUR as she is known (the reg starts with GUR!), is a 1969 Series IIA 88' Petrol in Blue. The first bit of history i know of her is from up in winkleigh, where she was a rusty wreck, and this was back in 2001. Since then, she has sat in various places around my friend's farm, and then at the new yard. It was decided that nothing was really happening with her, so i offered some money, and i got myself a logbook linking to a rusty wreck!

We did have a 2.0TD Perkins Prima engine out of a Montego, great little engine and it was going to be excellent in my new (old) girl! But, 8 years of sitting outside, albeit under cover, has done it no good what so ever! When we came to stripping it down, the job was getting more and more expensive. A new water pump would cost nearly £100. So the engine was plonked on the trusty fleabay. and sold to a chap who had already done the conversion, but had a cracked bolck, so it was perfect for him.

So now, we dont have a decent engine for her, but im planning on fitting a 300tdi and mating it to the original transmission. I want to keep the original tranny because of the tax exempt points system. I will be changing the axles(probably) the steering, and the engine so that leaves me with suspension and treansmission. She will be sat on parabolics, but trhey are still leafers, so are classed as original suspension, somehow!

Well, that is more than enough to bore you, im sure! I will be posting a few pictures of the progress so far, when i get around to it! Wish me luck, and here goes nothing!

good luck with the rebuild, looking forward to the pictures.

with the points system what would happen if you replaced with bits off a later but still tax free vehicle, say if you swapped the transmission on a series 1 for a 1972 series 3, it isn't the original stuff but its still from an historic vehicle

Well, the 200 my mate a bit better, but i did a quick measure, and i think the 300 would sit in the bay a bit better, i believe the fuel pump sits higher aswell as the turbo etc, so hopefully wont foul the chassis. I also like that its slightly more refined than the 200, i just personally prefer it! Im planning on getting a rust bucket disco, and robbing the engine and axles from it, and possibly some other bits, and go from there!

Do you know that a 200 bolts onto the same engine mounts but a 300 needs new ones made and fitted to the chassis? The glencoyne site has a new page about 200 vs 300. The 300 doesn't come off sounding better, just more available.

I didnt know that actually, good info :) To be perfectly honest, i will probably buy whatever i can afford, if a 200 comes along at the right time, i would go for it, completely depends on money tbh!

Well, This is how i got her, sat next to the barn, half stripped down, and looking extremely sorry for herself, poor old girl!

And the plants have taken charge, bastard weeds!

I did manage to get all the crap out from it, by crap i mean the stuff that should be attached to it, plus other land rover related crap! The seat box is out, so bugger all places to sit now!

The tub looks fairly tidy from here, the hardtop is good aswell, but the catflap needs some attention.

I sort of like the look of her with no roof, it did come off pretty damn easily too, all good so far!

Well, all the bolts needed grinding off from the tub, they were pretty damn seized, i didnt expect any better though!

I was very pleased with the underside of the tub, it had a bit of surface rust on the crossmember things, but no rot whatsoever!

Im not to fond on this look, nice and light though!

Well, the bulkhead come off fairly easily, mainly because the outrigger/a pillar bolts wernt attached to the outriggers any longer! The bulkhead is looking pretty nasty, and i think ive managed to get hold of a different one for bugger all money, and all it needs is footwell patching!

And this is how far i am at the moment, as i had to stop removing the engine so i could try and get the genny working again, bloody thing went pop! Well, although progress may be slow, it sure is going somewhere, And ive got a very good replacement chassis for her. Originally made in 1998 as a replacement, and never used properly, so i bought it and trekked up to wales in the work van to pick it up, a nice drive i must admit! I am bloody jelous of all you wales dwellers, looks like some damn awesome lanes around you!

Great pics, thanks for those. Looks like a really genuine little thing, looking forward to watching it get back together.

You're right about the looks - razor edge bonnet, lights in grille and topless is the best combo for a Series :)

The camera is certainly lieing! I havnt realy got the hammer to it yet, but tapping along it isnt very good, the dumb irons are buggered, all the outriggers are pretty much gone, along with the crossmembers, and pretty much the whole front section is only just supporting itself, there is a hell of alot of very thin metal, many holes would be blown trying to weld to it!
