Series 3 strange noises

My 1973 series 3 station wagon is making clunking & grinding noises from the front passenger side drive shaft area.It has been stuck in 4WD for some months now.I have set the freewheeling hubs to 2WD but there seems to be a lot of drag there still.Any ideas please?

Sounds to me like you have a problem with a front axle UJ. Have you tried removing the front prop shaft and driving it like that? See if the noise goes away.
