Series 2 Series 3/ Defender wiper motor compatibility

Can I have some advice please.

Two years ago I changed the original bulkhead on my 1962 3a to a refurbished one from a later 1969 model with the rack type windscreen wipers.
The motor has now burned out and I want a replacement.

Is the Series 3/ Defender one a direct replacement for the later Series 2a type? I've read conflicting opinions as to whether it is.

Can somebody recommend which is the better motor to buy.

Hard to believe the windings have burnt out they are pretty bombproof.. Are you sure the brushes dont need replacing?

You can get them rewound, but its as likely to be brushes or communator. If its burned out it dead shorts.
