Security ideas ?

During the late sixties/early seventies I had a series 1 86" LR, impossible to lock, so I would take the steering wheel off and take it in the pub with me. Worked well til some bugger nicked the steering wheel, I drove it home with 2 pairs of mole grips gripped to the shaft. After I got a new steering wheel I would always leave it behind the bar til closing time.

Used to have a pay as you go mobile phone in a box permantly on charge and turned on silent hiden behind dash if it was nicked you could track it, through some web tracking service cant remember the web detail but I think there is a few now. All it cost was 1 text message to track.

Just tracked my phone through google latitude and it was spot on

Within 7 meters usually. I do gsm testing.

So basically you can track a phone through google latitude you set it up as track friends and family hide the old phone with a payg sim and a in car charger , then you can track it for free ( cheap version of tracker )

as long as every 6 months (network depending) you remember to pull it out and make a call on it, most, if not all PAYG now require you to make a chargable call every 6 months or so to keep the sim active.

Essentially yes.... but a tracker is a long way from being a security device. It is better than nothing without a doubt.... but it doesn't tell you when the vehicle is stolen or allow interaction.

While I understand that people want a low cost solution, I am always shocked at how much people will recoil away from spending out on a decent anti theft system... when they are trying to protect their pride and joy.

Agreed there is no better than a hand grenade under the drivers seat

Has anyone fitted a Mech Lock (from Mud Stuff) to the brakes....

I know it may be a gray area as far as the EU rules go, but while it is a grey area is seams like a really good solution to all methods of theft apart from a Hiab.

Any thoughts/flames/comments?

I'm really thinking about doing this myself.

We used to wire crow scarer bangers up to both sides of a coil with fuse wire as kids, wire got hot an set it off under the bonnet

Just needs a bit of refinement/delay for the cab :screaming_bug_eye_f

Thinking of wiring into the interior light, with a heavy enough fuse wire so it takes long enough for you to get in the cab and turn the light off......

My 07 Defender went in 2010 and then I found out just how easy it is to short out alarm/immobiliser with the LR security system fitted. If you dont know how then pm me. LR would do nothing and said the security system was "adequate" ???? I just heard of a 2012 truck stolen the sam e way last week.

The advice from police and the industry was:

1. A modern alarm/ immobiliser, separately wired
2. Steering Disklock/pedal lock; visible deterrents
3. Tracker
4. park in a lit area, plus ccctv if poss

Modern trackers are very small and I am sure a small box could be riveted under somewhere to hide it. Of course a professional with time to spare will find it, but time is their problem. I fitted a "Skytag" tracker with a "night safe" programme so that if the truck moves out of a 500m circle from its designated parking place between whatever hours you set, the system is alerted and you/police get a call. They have a very good track record.
PS My truck was found parked up by the police within 24 hours - they thought that the thieves would wait that long to see if a tracker was fitted before they returned to take it to sell/dismantle.
