Hi guys just wonderd how much a second hand diff would be??,as mine went bang today!!!!.I'm not happy as i've lost 7 weeks work because of this and not had the car long and only done 3000 miles.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Bell Engineering do a recon diff with warranty for £350 or there is this one on Ebay, item no. 181162219373 for £100 located in Devon.

Check that the VCU is working as it should otherwise it could have contributed to the diff failure.

Thanks for that mate,I will change the vcu aswell.

If the car is driveable with the rear propshaft disconnected and removed from the IRD & rear diff., you could give Bell Eng. a call and take a run up the M5 and they will sort you out. You probably know that they have an excellent reputation on here and are THE Freelander Gurus when it comes to IRD, VCU & diff. problems. If the car is not driveable, you can ship your VCU up to them and they will check it out for you. :)

Diff has big hole in the rear casing,so not driveable!!!

You could drop the diff and then split the driveshafts just leaving the outer cv's in place??....or just remove the guts from the diff.

you could also think about doing this gets you moving again

remove the propshaft
remove the rear driveshafts completly
remove the diff

this will just mean u run in 2 wheel drive mode and least gives you chance to use the car while you source some bits

It would definitely be 2 wheel drive when the wheels fall off.

Why would the wheels fall off

The diff and driveshaft don't hold the wheels on the rear tie rods do

The drive shaft holds the hub into the wheel bearing using that big nut ;) If you remove the nut and withdraw the drive shaft you wouldn't be able to go far before the hub came out of the wheel bearing!
The CV joint would have to be stripped at the hub if the drive shafts are removed.
