seats... rules and regs?

howdy,

i have brought myself a 90 hardtop, yet i now need the function of an extra couple of seats in the back, but as i still use it for work, i need the space in the back so forward facing seats are a no no. does anybody know the law about whether i can fit sideways facing seats in the back? just that i heard something that it was illegal to manufacture cars with them. therefore if i put sideways facing seats in a car which origanally was not intended to have seats in the back, am i breaking the law by doing so? advice would be gratefully recieved.

What year is it? I think the only difference between the 90 SW and van is the windows.

My 1998 Defender has sideways facing seats fitted as standard. Complete with seatbelts. They fold up when not required.

why not put exmoor forward facing fold up seats which fold up onto the wheel arches but legally face forward - have yer cake and eat it!!!
