Recently the battery in my P38 RR Vogue (2001MY) failed & in the process of jump starting the car the Sat Nav & Radio failed. The Sat Nav now only displays a white screen & the Map CD constantly ejects & reloads itself. The radio plays only on 2 rear speakers with no volume control, up or down, & no balance, fade, treble control etc. All fuses that supply the Sat Nav & Radio have been checked & are not blown.

I have tried disconnecting the new (£100 battery), waiting for everything to discharge & then reconnect but that achieved nothing. So far I have been told that it; requires a new Sat Nav screen, a new radio, a new Body Control ECU or it needs a reboot disc or a computer to read & analyse the fault code & reset it.

Has anyone out there in Landrover Land seen this problem or has the faintest idea what the problem really is? Answers in plain English please;)

it may seem stupid of me, but you don't say whether you checked the fuses or not!! there are fused under the driver seat, and under the bonnet, do that first

sorry it was stupid of me lol you checked them!! other thing is when you jumped started the car, are you sure it wasnt 24v? i almost had someone from the AA do that, until i told him in no uncertain terms where to go

Thanks Dopey, I have checked the fuses under the driver's seat. Didn't realise there were more for Sat Nav under the bonnet, I'll try there now. It was definitely 12v, one of those portable jumper things you get for £20 from the cheap shop, which has a light & compressor in it as well. Just a bit worried it has blown one of the magic computers that cost at least £300 & you can only get from a dealer. I'll let you know what happens next.

Well it's fixed, sort of! Removed the SatNav from the rear & the radio now works properly. It looks like something in the SatNav has blown & convinced the radio that it was trying to give directions, thus turning off the front speakers for music. At least I have entertinment but don't know where I'm going! All I need now is £750 for a new SatNav. Does anyone know of a repairer? Trev

Atually it is the Sat Nav computer in the back of the car that has blown, it makes the car think that it is trying to give you sat nav instructions hence muting the car stereo, if you remove the old one and gt new one of ebay for around £150 everything will work fine again, NEVER unplug of disconnect a car battery until the red light on the sat nav is turned of, normally at least 2 minutes after any activity on the car, eg opening doors etc , any question email me.

Hi Eddy,

My fix was to remove the Sat Nav unit where the Disk goes, (Rear O/S of boot area) It fixes just like a radio in a standard DIN slot & has 4 spring clips which can be released with 4 fine screwdrivers or pop rivets, using the tails. The clips are about 1 1/4 " behind the facia. Once the clips are depressed the unit should just slide out. Once removed there are a couple of cables to the rear which just unclip. Hopefully that should put the radio back to normal, then all you need is to get the Sat Nav fixed, but I haven't got that far yet!

Eddy,

Forgot to mention the initial cause of the problem was failure of the car battery, does that sound familiar?

Hi Trev,

I bought the car ( a mint 4.6 vogue ) from the local garage. On test drive all seemed ok but 5 mins after purchase the air bag light came on so returned it to the garage who said they would fix at their cost.
The car went for repair but i believe they dis-connected the battery while the gps was active with the red light on, which i believe is bad news.
Car is going in on the 5th of jan for airbag ecu fitment so will get them to repair the satnav at the same time as they broke it. as far as i am concerned they should have known better !! Will keep you posted.

Cheers,
Eddy

hi guys

I have some similar problems also.. I too had battery issue which resulted in me jump starting the car. Since then my sat nav has not been working. It has a red line through GPS in the top left hand corner, and my pointer is in the middle of the sea! I have not yet checked the fuses, could anybody here point them out please? Plus have any idea of other causes of this problem.

Kindly

Gurpreet

Glad to see that I'm not the only one - I'm having exactly the same problem on my P38. The battery died, which confused the immobiliser, took a while to get that sorted but now that I've done so, I have a dead satnav showing just a white screen and have exactly the same issues with the radio - sound through the back two speakers, no vol control etc.

I don't have the option of taking the car to a dealer as I live in the back and beyond in Africa - any clues on how/whether it's possible to fix the satnav computer without a dealer? I'm pretty reluctant to shell out £300 for a new computer if they're so touchy that they die in case of a few battery problems (which let's face it aren't unusual on the P38).

Any suggestions from other users would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Piers

First you all need to sort out the battery problem. I hab a battery that kept going flat i went on this site and asked for help and got loads of it.I was told to disconect the RF reciver in the back of the car. This took me all of five min and now i no longer have any flat battery problems. After you sort that problem you can sort out the sat nav and radio or you may just repair it then blow it up again with the next flat battery.

so has anyone ever had the sat nav fixed ??? I had a battery replaced the clown that did it didnt do the pos neg neg pos thing,,, <huff juck it > !

Hi Andy,

No they didn't. I did manage to contact a guy in the local yellow pages & he said he knew of someone in Newcastle Upon Tyne who he would take it to but to be honest I just haven't got around to it. One day maybe!! I suppose the choice between £650 for a new one plus fitting against 99p for the latest road atlas was a bit of a no brainer.

I am new at the forum stuff, and I am in America. So if I do not understand all the British lingo please forgive me. But I killed my battery by leaving the lights on...I got a jump and now my radio will not play. I checked the 2 fuses under the steering wheel (#16 and 17 I believe) and they are fine. The radio will not even power on. I have a 99 Discovery 2. Can someone please help.
